Clare
“Okay, so it’s… not perfect,” I tell my friend Jess, as she pulls up in front of
113 Chiswick Road.
“That’s an understatement.” She finishes parallel parking in the only
available spot, then lowers her aviators and peers through the hazy
sunshine.
“Well, I mean, it’s a little run-down, but —”
“Let’s not sugarcoat this, Clare. This place is a dump. Are you sure you
want to go through with this?”
“Honestly, I knew it wouldn’t be ideal.”
If my head would stop pounding, that would be fabulous. My eyes burn
with fatigue. I’m in that weird stage of hunger where nothing sounds
appealing.

And this house I’ve rented… Oof.
It’s difficult to buy even a simple pair of leggings online. Half the time
they’re too short. Scratchy seams. Way too big, or annoyingly small.
So, why on earth did I think it was a good idea to choose a home to rent,
based on one measly ad on the internet—seventeen photos and a paragraph
of text?

Ah yes… I remember: I was desperate.
The tiny house set back on a postage-stamp-sized overgrown lawn looks
sad. I’ve rented the Eeyore of houses.
I take in the spotty mix of gray and white peeling paint. The crooked
screen door. Countless missing roof shingles. The rickety fence that
separates the yard from the sidewalk is missing a few boards, so it looks
like a gap-toothed grimace.

Out of habit, I look away from the depressing image and down at the
phone in my hands, like something on the screen might save me.
Also out of habit, my fingertips itch to snap a photo. That’s what I’d be
doing right now if this rental was post-worthy. It’s not, though. I think a
social media post with a snapshot of this unit might earn me a half-dozen
sad faces with a sprinkling of care emojis. The same dose of online pity that
I got when I posted that it was over for me and Stephan.

If things had gone differently, I’d have already moved into the big,
fancy, brand-new condo on Shire Boulevard…
The one I researched.
Visited in person.

Signed the lease for… with Stephan.
That was before he dumped me, of course. We broke our lease and
forfeited our security deposit a few days after our split. I tackled the job of
finding a rental unit on my own, way late in the game, and the options were
few and far between.

“Clare, for real. You look like you’re going to cry.” Jess glances at me
warily, like she’s worried I’m about to melt into a puddle of tears right here
in the passenger seat of her Toyota Forerunner. She places a motherly hand
on my shoulder and looks at me through wisps of her auburn bangs. “It’s
like I’m always telling Jasper: Feel your feelings.”

That advice might be helpful for her four-year-old son, but I’m a little
beyond that step. Feeling my feelings at this point might require hours of
therapy or a cathartic sad-movie marathon, and I don’t have time for either
of those things.
