“What the hell is going on out there?”
I glanced over at Sadie and bit back a grin. She was so excited, and
probably more than a little nervous, that she was almost vibrating with
energy – which thrilled me because there were some days that she could
barely muster the energy to get out of bed. In the last few weeks, she hadn’t
experienced any of those low days because they had been filled with secret
preparations and whispered conversations as we made plans for our escape.
The dull hum we could hear through the open window soon turned into a
full roar. It sounded like there were at least a thousand motorcycles right
outside.
The sound was so loud that Bubba actually came awake with a snort and
lifted his head off the recliner where he’d been snoring for the last hour.
“What the . . . What’s going on?”
I shrugged and looked toward the kitchen where his mother Tammy was
loudly talking on the phone. Before Bubba could say anything else, she
stomped into the living room and said, “Your daddy just called and said he
needs us down at the station. There are bikers everywhere all of a sudden,
and he needs all hands on deck to keep the peace. Heaven only knows what
they’ll do. There’ll probably be riots in the streets, and they’ll rob us all
blind!”
“Well, shit,” Bubba grumbled as he hefted his heaving bulk out of the
recliner. Once he was standing, he readjusted his sagging uniform pants
and grabbed his duty belt off the back of the couch. As he wrapped it
around his considerable belly and buckled it, he asked his mom, “You’ve
gotta go help with dispatch?”
“Of course,” Tammy huffed. “Can’t nobody handle a damn thing by
themselves. You know that.” She pointed her finger at me and Sadie before
she said, “You girls stay inside. Don’t even go out on the porch. There’s no
telling what sort of riffraff is out there today, and I want you safe.”
Bubba glanced over and frowned at us. I tried not to gag when I saw the
dried drool at the corners of his mouth. “You girls best get to the kitchen
and finish the dinner Ma started. We’ll be hungry when we get back.”
Tammy snorted. “What’s Sadie going to do in the kitchen? Nothing.
That’s what. And you . . .” Tammy shot me a glare. “You stay out of my
kitchen. I know you’ll just try to poison us again.”
I gave Tammy an innocent smile before I assured her, “That was an
accident.”
“Yeah,” Bubba grumbled before he lumbered toward the front door. “Ma
get outside. I’m gonna lock this door so there aren’t any problems.”
“You do that, baby,” Tammy said as she picked up her huge purse. “Kiss
my grandbaby when she wakes up, and don’t you neglect her while I’m
gone.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Sadie said dutifully as Tammy glared at me again. “You two
be careful out there.”
“Don’t you worry, girl. We’ll handle this,” Bubba assured her before he
pulled the door shut behind him.
