“You’re fired!” my boss shouted. Catherine Beauchamp Ashcroft, sole
heir of the vast Ashcroft fortune, rose to her formidable height of six
feet, towering over her gleaming glass desk. She stabbed her clawlength, highly polished fingernail my way. “Get out of my office. Now.”
I drew myself up stiffly and tugged on my designer suit jacket that
contrasted nicely with my skirt and knock-off brand heels. I could barely
afford the jacket when I bought it. Designer heels? Not on this salary.
“Asking me to sleep with a client to secure a deal is sexual harassment,”
I said stiffly. I wanted to whimper and slide under her desk. My fridge was
nearly empty, and my landlord would boot me out if I was late with the rent.
Did Catherine realize what it cost to rent a miniscule apartment in New
York City?
If she did, she hadn’t considered it when she offered me the assistant
position with such a tiny salary.
I’d moved to New York six years ago, determined to prove to my overprotective parents I had what it took to survive on my own. And while I was
proud of working my way up from temp jobs to this one, I hadn’t proven a
thing if I couldn’t hold down a job.
“Sexual harassment would be me telling you that you have to sleep with
me to keep your job,” Catherine snapped. “Leave my building this instant.
Your badge will stop working the second you reach the sidewalk. You can
expect your final check to be deposited in your account tomorrow.”
Arguing with her would get me nowhere. Neither would pleading.
Kindness hadn’t made even a nick in her bones. She had no heart.
I wasn’t going to sleep with someone to hold onto a job.
With quiet dignity, I turned and strode from her office, only stopping at
my desk in the adjacent room to collect my things.
It wasn’t until I sat on the subway, waiting for the stop near my
apartment, that I started to cry.
T , I sat on my murphy bed in my tiny efficiency
apartment, chewing on the end of my long brown hair while going through
the help wanted ads on my phone. I’d already applied for three positions I
was highly qualified for, only to receive prompt rejections. This was a
repeat of yesterday and my experience the day before.
I was beginning to suspect my old boss had blackballed me. If so, my
landlord was going to kick me out within a week. He’d drag me outside and
put my belongings on the sidewalk. Someone else would move in while I
sat sobbing on the curb.
My phone pinged with a message from Mom. Now that you’re between
jobs, you can finally move back home!
I love it here in the city, I replied. I’ll find a new job.
The first was true, the last was proving a challenge. But I’d succeeded
before, and I would again.
