Nicci looked up as Ethan brought her a glass of water, crouching beside her
and stroking her hair from her forehead. She took a sip, then another,
thankful for the cool of the liquid as it ran down her throat. She knew she’d
had a panic attack, something she’d been prone to since her mum had
become ill, all those years ago, when she’d been in her last year at school.
They always left her feeling dazed and exhausted, sticky with sweat.

Thankfully, Ethan had witnessed her going through these before and
knew what to do. He’d driven her home, carried her inside and laid her
down on the sofa, covering her with a blanket. Seconds later, her Jack
Russell terrier, Mack, had burrowed inside the blanket, giving her worried
licks, sensing something was wrong.

The cottage was in the middle of a long, stone-built terrace, the old
weavers’ cottages that used to house workers from the disused mill at the
bottom of the village. Ethan said it was too small, but she enjoyed living
there, with the views of the hills at the front and fields at the back. It was a
simple layout, easy to keep clean and tidy. There was a living room at the
front of the cottage, the kitchen at the back and the stairs running up the
wall between the two. Upstairs there was a double bedroom at the back, a
smaller bedroom at the front with a narrow bathroom next to it. The décor
was tired and dated, the furniture well worn, the bathroom suite avocado,
but it was homely.

The front room was small enough to be termed cosy by the letting
agent, only big enough for the sofa and a chair, positioned in front of the
fireplace, a dining table pushed against the far wall. Ethan must have put
another log on the stove because she could see orange flames licking the
glass.

‘You okay, love?’
His voice snapped her out of her daze and she murmured a ‘Thank you’
as she handed the glass back to him. Her body felt limp and weak, a
headache banging at her temples. She leant back against the cushions,
closing her eyes, wondering if her mind was playing tricks on her, making
her imagine things. It had happened to her before, panicking about events
that might happen but didn’t, coming round from an episode thinking the
worst. She knew she’d had a panic attack but were the images in her mind
real?

Ethan put the glass on the coffee table and stood, pulling a hand through
his dark, wavy hair. He looked rumpled, his blue eyes wild, a shadow of
stubble on his normally clean-shaven chin. ‘I think I should go back and
check,’ he said, eyes darting towards the door. ‘Make sure they’re okay.’
His words brought a replay of the accident into her mind, a slow-motion
reel that made her heart start racing again. Oh God, I knocked someone
over.
