LEAD VEHICLE
SPECIAL OPERATIONS THREE-VEHICLE CONVOY
ONE AND A HALF MILES WEST OF GOUNDAM
SOUTH OF LAC TÉLÉ, MALI
PRESENT DAY
0215 LOCAL TIME
Special Operations Chief Tvler Brooks shifted in the front passenger seat of
the Hyundai H200 SUV, but it didn’t help. He was wedged in tight, and no
amount of squirming could fix that. The vehicle certainly had plenty of
room for a Sunday family drive to Cracker Barrel but was clearly not
designed with fully kitted-up special operators in mind. Navy SEALs
weren’t compact dudes by “normal” standards, but add sixty pounds of
body armor and gear and you got yourself the Special Operations equivalent
of a clown car.
And I’m the ringleader of this circus, he thought with a chuckle.
Despite uncomfortable moments like this, Tyler loved being on mission.
He loved serving his country, sure, but most of all, he loved the brotherhood
that was US Naval Special Warfare. He’d die for his country, but he’d die
for his brothers first . . . if that made sense.
He used a gloved hand to scratch at his beard and then adjusted the FN
SCAR-L assault rifle in his lap. Tonight, their X was a walled compound
housing two two-story buildings just outside Goundam, which was every bit
of three hundred miles northeast of Bamako.
According to Farley, their 18
Delta Special Operations combat medic whose real name was Warren Perry,
the run-down metropolis of Bamako was the only “real” city in Mali. Of
course, Farley hailed from some tiny ass town outside of Mobile, Alabama,
so Tyler wasn’t sure how much of an expert on “real” cities that made him.
Tyler made a mental note to ask Farley what was the biggest city the kid
had ever actually visited. If New Orleans was the answer, then he was going
to haze the shit out of him.
“Reaper One, Mother—I show you one mile from the turn,” Zee called
in his ear from her duty station in the TOC, or Tactical Operations Center.
Tyler smiled. Always a step ahead, planning the next move and
anticipating fires—that was Lieutenant Zee Williams. She’d already been
the intel lead when he’d arrived at the Tier One unit as a second-class petty
officer. Zee wasn’t just the smartest person in every room, but she was also
a total badass. As an intel officer, she wasn’t required to fully qualify on
Green Team—the JSOC SEAL Team training-and-selection course—but
she’d completed the course anyway on her arrival to the unit.
The Green
Team instructors had used her success to browbeat seasoned SEALs who
came after and found themselves struggling. In Tyler’s Green Team class,
the instructor had pulled Zee out of a meeting to run the ropes course and
“show these frogmen how to do it.” As it turned out, there’s no better way
to motivate a bunch of SEALs than forcing them to congratulate a female
intelligence officer after she’d run the course they’d failed to satisfactorily
execute.
Everyone in the command had mad respect for Zee, and that included
Tyler.
“Reaper One, roger,” he finally answered. “Time to next overflight
pass?”
