Sighing, Melody gazed down Fifth Avenue, a 3D ribbon of asphalt,
concrete, and tall buildings stretching on for what seemed like forever.
She stood at the pinnacle of her career. Last night’s Radio City Music Hall’s
sold-out concert had been the last in her current tour. Here she was about to
explore New York City, so shouldn’t she be ecstatic?

Blinking against the sudden sting in her eyes, all she could think about
was her most recent breakup, and the fact that she didn’t have anyone
special to share her life—or even the day—with.

It had only been two weeks since she’d broken up with her most recent
romantic disaster. Mr. Gorgeous had turned out to be just another jerk in a
long line of shallow hustlers after her money or her connections in the
music industry. Her latest disappointment had taken advantage of her
celebrity status to promote himself. Once he’d gotten what he wanted,
things fell apart so fast that she still suffered whiplash. Turned out, he
hadn’t cared about her at all. Could it be that loneliness was the flip side of
fame? Being a celebrity certainly had its share of pitfalls, and the avaricious
social climbers and users ranked high on that list.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself! Right. Drawing her coat tighter against
the snow and the frigid January wind, Melody joined the throng of
pedestrians crossing the street. She entered Saks Fifth Avenue and drew in
the rarified air of the iconic landmark.

She’d tucked her hair under a thick, knitted wool hat, and she wore her
fake glasses. With no makeup, and dressed in regular clothes, she hoped no
one would recognize her. Today, she wanted to be nothing more than
another face in the crowd, an anonymous shopper trudging the sidewalks of
New York City.

Gravitating to the perfume counter, she picked up a card and spritzed it
with a sample scent. She took a sniff and put the card down. Her mom
wouldn’t like the overpowering fragrance.
“May I help you find something in particular?” an attractive young
brunette behind the counter asked.

“I’m shopping for a birthday present for my mother, but I’m not sure
perfume is something she’d want me to pick out for her. Can you tell me
where I might find handbags?”

“Of course.” The clerk pointed toward the up escalator and gave her
directions. “And Ms. Fairchild, can I just say how much I love your
music?” The clerk leaned across the counter and kept her voice low. “I was
at your concert last night, and it was fantastic, the best I’ve been to in
years.”

“Thank you.” Damn. So much for hiding her identity behind a pair of
glasses. She took them off and tucked them into her purse. This girl was a
fan. Would others recognize her so easily? She hoped not.

“Would you give me your autograph? I wouldn’t ask, but I might never
get another chance.” The clerk flashed her a pleading look.
Melody smiled. “I’d be happy to.”
