JADE
PROPPING my phone between my ear and my shoulder, I opened the freezer
case and grabbed a bag of frozen chicken.
“You know we just spoke five hours ago.”
I grinned at Ruby’s voice as I let the door shut, heading over to the
discounted frozen vegetables. “Don’t act like you weren’t counting the
minutes.”

“How are those job applications going? Maybe once you start working
again, you’ll leave me in peace.”
“It’s like you don’t know me at all, lil sis,” I scoffed. “The first thing I
look for in job descriptions is how often I’ll be able to step away and text
you. You’d think I died if I didn’t send you at least a dozen memes a day.
It’s like our proof of life.”

Ruby chuckled, and as always, the sound made something in my chest
ease. We joked around, but I took my job as my sister’s caretaker seriously,
even though she hadn’t lived with me in almost five years. She acted like I
was an overbearing older sister, but with just the two of us against the
world, we’d grown closer than regular siblings. We were each other’s best
friends, our ride-or-dies, and I’d hunt down anyone who tried to hurt her.
“At what point will you stop calling me lil sis? I turn 21 in six months.”
“That would be never,” I said, hating that I’d miss yet another birthday.

“Now, tell me about today’s training.”
Without missing a beat, Ruby launched into details about her lessons
with Brigid Morgaine, the witch she’d been living with in Deadlights Cove,
Maine, for the last five years, working to hone her magic.

I smiled as she recounted hunting down the mysterious wandering
coffee van, laughing over where the two quirky owners parked this morning
— somehow inside the town’s gazebo. She chuckled over the seniors tiedying everything in sight, then a mishap with a local demon that resulted in
the whole town smelling like popcorn for days, and the sound of her
happiness made my eyes prick. That ridiculous town had ended up being
perfect for her — absurd and yet so normal in the way they looked after
each other, and especially Ruby.

Almost twelve years ago I’d become her sole guardian after our parents
died in a car crash, leaving me in charge of a nine-year-old when I was only
21. Despite the many mistakes I’d made in her upbringing, getting her to
Deadlights Cove was one thing I knew I’d done right.

As much as it hurt, I needed Ruby as far away as possible. Trouble
always found me, no matter how often I moved.
“Mo let me move out to the carriage house, did I tell you that?” Ruby
said, and it pulled me back to the present, away from the memories of my
own life at her age — vastly different from her current one. But I wasn’t
resentful, not after everything I’d put her through.

My familiar guilt threatened to swallow me whole, but I forced it down,
feigning excitement for her benefit. “Well, look at you, fancy pants. How is
it?”
