DAISY LITTON KNEW this day would come. Now that she was permanently
back at the Crossing, it was inevitable, given how many friends they had in
common. She’d expected it would be at an event like the barbeque tonight
at the Tolley place, where there would be stacks of people, making it easy to
avoid Connor O’Brien. She’d been bracing herself for that first meeting.
Getting caught by surprise hadn’t occurred to her. Nor had the chance of
running across him by himself on the boardwalk, staring over the lake, and
her with a mob of other people’s kids and Cory Tolley looking on.
Cory was giving her weird glances—not surprising when she’d
witnessed their last meeting nearly five years ago. This time, she would not
yell and throw things. Worst-case scenario, she would be polite and move
on, protected by the children.
The hope that Connor wouldn’t notice her was a forlorn one. The noisy
children, bubbling with excitement, drew everyone’s eyes.
Connor turned his head, his gaze skipping over Cory and the children
and landing on her. Something changed, his hazel eyes darkening. He
turned on the spot, leaning back against the wide wooden railing. His
elbows rested on the timber; one booted heel hooked on the lowest wire of
the protective fence. Watching her walk those last few metres to where he
waited.
The pose accentuated every masculine thing about him. Film-star good
looks under a mop of curly dark hair with copper highlights. The hair was
longer than she expected but it gave him a rakish look that was definitely
appealing.
The broad muscular shoulders and chest stretched the fabric of his dark
blue polo shirt with the bright green Shamrock Bus Service logo. Strong
thighs bulged against the denim and the other masculine parts of him filled
out the low-slung jeans. It wasn’t fair.
Her breath caught, became thready. All the reasons they’d got together
more than a dozen years ago ricocheted through her body, lighting it up in
ways she’d almost forgotten in the last few years.
Cory murmured something and Daisy jolted back to the present.
“What?”
“Looks like he plans to speak to you. I’ll go ahead with the kids.”
“Traitor.”
With a raised eyebrow, her friend acknowledged the insult and shrugged
it off. “You hardly want witnesses for this? Or do you?”
“Yes. No.” She saw Connor straighten. “You’re right. Better get it over
with, without little eyes with big mouths watching.” They’d be happy
stuffing themselves at the cupcake shop while she had a long overdue
conversation with her ex.
Slowing her steps, she let the others move ahead. The kids waved at
Connor, burbling out happy greetings. Of course, they knew him. They’d
been back in the Crossing since last Christmas, so they’d have run into him
at all the usual places. His smile at the children was wide and uninhibited.
Enough to bring her heart into her throat. The quick fade as he turned his
attention to her sent her heart plummeting.
The memory of that last meeting brought the taste of humiliation to her
mouth. It had been his third trip to see her at Byron Bay, about two months
after she’d moved out, and had come at the worst time.
