WILLOW WRAPPED HER CLOAK a little tighter around her body,
pressing herself further into the shadows, away from the bright fluorescent
lights of the currency exchange counter. Her eyes, however, were trained on
the Jorvlen captain approaching the desk. A wry smile spread across her
face as she carefully observed the transaction, waiting for the right moment
to strike.

“I want a thousand in universal funds on each of these cards, and I have
some gems to exchange, too,” the Jorvlen captain told the clerk, pushing a
stack of cards across the counter.

“Certainly, sir,” came the clerk’s reply, and a few scans and beeps later, the
stack slid back across the counter toward the Jorvlen male.
He didn’t pick them up immediately, though. Instead, Willow watched as he
reached into his pouch to pull out a bag of precious stones, and she knew
that was her chance.

With her hood pulled over her head to disguise the fact she was a human
woman, she stepped out of the shadows and toward the counter.
The Jorvlen was still turned away, and Willow felt her heart beat faster in
her chest as she closed her hand around the cards.
“Hey!” the clerk called, but Willow was already running.
“Come back, you little thief!” The Jorvlen captain snarled and took off after
her.

Willow heard his heavy footsteps gaining on her quickly, crashing through
the clanging metal halls of the Verti T1 Space Station. But where the
Jorvlen was heavy and strong, Willow was spry and swift. Plus, she knew
the space station like the back of her hand.

She ducked quickly into a side alley, dodging past beings from all over the
galaxy as she raced away from the furious Jorvlen captain.
“Come back!” he called out as he struggled to turn into the alley at full
speed but instead crashed into the wall.

Willow ignored the shouts of passersby behind her as she jumped over a
pile of spare parts and entered a docking station. Mechanics rushed back
and forth, carrying ship parts or running fuel lines to refill the myriad of
spacecraft docked there.

Through a spray of sparks from a nearby work station, she ducked behind a
ship and into a service alley that she knew led back to the main floor of the
sprawling space station. Through the bustle of the dock, however, the
Jorvlen’s footsteps were growing quieter, and now was her chance to
change personas.

Rounding the corner of the service alley, she pulled off her cloak, roughly
folding it in her hands as she ran. She was no longer a cloaked thief. Now
she was simply Willow Jackson—a regular human woman with long curly
brown hair, copper eyes, and pale skin. Just one of a million other citizens
of the galaxy conducting business on Verti T1.

Alongside the legitimate business interests that operated within the space
station was a kind of shadow industry that Willow was an expert in,
namely: cheating, stealing, scamming, and pirating. The currency cards
were a pittance compared to her real target.

As she ran the length of the service exit, she grinned to herself. She already
had an antique spaceship to steal, and afte
