ZEUS
THE MASSIVE SIGN OUTSIDE OF TRAV’S RANCH READS, “WELCOME TO
the wedding of Andrew and Andrew.”
The sign throws me. Atlas and Lemon, as we know them, both having
the same first name is some weird twist of fate.

Trav’s living-slash-dining room has been emptied of its furniture and
replaced with large round reception tables and wedding decor. White
ribbons drape from the ceiling, potted plants with fairy lights line a square
big enough for a dance floor, and the whole place is decked out in white.
As I pass all of that and head for the wide-open glass doors leading to
the backyard, there’s an arrow to the left saying “Groom’s side” and another
pointing to the right, which also says “Groom’s side.”

I’d laugh if it wasn’t so sickeningly cutesy.
Trust Atlas to go all out. His wedding is like a fairy tale and completely
different to what you’d think he’d want if you didn’t know him the way we
do. But this actually screams Atlas.
He got his man.

And I’m happy for him. I really am.
But all this love is … catching. First, Iris fell—someone I never thought
would—and then our boss, Trav. Now Atlas.
Though Atlas is the first one to make it down the aisle.
I spot Iris with his partner, Saint, and go sit in their row next to them,
singing, “Another One Bites the Dust.”

The sun is shining, though lowering toward the horizon. It’s the perfect
backdrop with sunset falling over the vast, empty planes of Palm Desert.
“You’re next,” Iris says, but it sounds more like a threat.
To me, it is.

There’s a reason my name is Zeus, and it’s not because I’m a god. Even
if I tell people that’s why. I’m not known for monogamy. Or relationships,
really. Like everyone says, I fuck anyone who has a heartbeat. All
consensually, of course. It’s easy for me to find willing participants, and
that’s not being conceited. If anything, it’s kind of sad. Sometimes it feels
like how I look is my only personality trait. At least to other people.

Instead of denying that I, in any way, shape, or form, will be the next
person to fall in love, I goad Iris. “Hell, at this rate, I’ll be married before
you two.” I lean around him and say to Saint, “When are you tying the
knot?”

They refuse to make eye contact with each other as a blanket of
awkwardness passes over them.
My work here is done.
“I hear there’s a new guy starting at Mike Bravo,” Iris says.
“Nice subject change,” I point out.

“I’m just saying, new gay guy on the team. Fresh blood. Someone who
doesn’t know you’re a walking venereal disease.”
“I’ll have you know my last physical showed a perfect bill of health. So
suck it. Also, you know it’s against the rules. You found a loophole because
you’re in love or whatever, and that’s something I’m not willing to do just
so I can get some sex.”

Saint leans in closer to his boyfriend. “Statistically, Zeus has probably
already had sex with the new guy anyway.”
I mock offense to that. “You’ve been with Iris for too long. You’re
