This Mess We’re In
— SUNDAY —
Pulling me back from the bedroom door for the third time this morning,
Ben vaults over the sofa and growls in my ear. “Let them sleep.”
This time, I almost managed to turn the doorknob. I think I might be
gettin’ quieter, stealthier… or they’re just tired of jumping up to stop me.
We’re all pretty worn out and let’s face it, daylight hasn’t magically made
me more obedient.
“I wasn’t going to wake them. I just wanted to check one more time.”
Ben leads me back to the seating area but doesn’t give me the speech again.
I still hear it in my head, though. ‘X needs to rest. If you go in there, your
scent will wake them up.’ The blah, blah, blah at the end is, I hope, implicit.
I believe them. I really do. Shadow should rest and get better, but if they
just popped into existence while I slept, could they pop away again while
they’re sleeping? Last night they made it clear that they intend to go back to
the place they almost died, and I don’t know how strongly I can state it: that
is not fucking happening.
I’ve tried reading and doom-scrolling on my phone. I also made out with
Ben for a few minutes. But no matter what I do, the need to be with Shadow
returns like an intrusive thought. It cuts through everything else. Nothing is
as important as being next to the piece of my heart sleeping in the next
room… Nothing.
“Do you need a distraction?” Ben pulls me onto his lap and nuzzles at my
neck. I squirm at the ticklish sensation and then my eyes return to the closed
door. Tomas exhales a heavy breath—the sound audible throughout the
well-appointed room.
Big Daddy Wolf has been quiet all morning. I mean, he’s always rather
stoic, but today I’m reminded of the wolf I first met—observant and a little
snarly. I unfurl my gift and his eyes meet mine with a flicker of gold. He
always knows when I’m reading him these days. He says it’s the pack bond
with Ben and if he bit me in, it’d be even stronger. I’d probably be okay
with that, but it’s not the kind of thing I can just suggest and I’m not at all
convinced it’s what he wants either.
I keep going. My gift slides around his hard edges and into the cracks and
crevices. He gives me a soft swipe of affection, but underneath I find
contemplation and a smidgen of insecurity. I suspect he’s jealous of Shadow
and Gray’s new relationship.
I don’t know all the details, but they told us a little last night. Shadow is
bonded to our vampire and completely smitten—that much is clear. I don’t
get a say in how other people feel about each other, but I’m thrilled to see
that all that bratting and grumping seems to have resolved into something
wonderful.
I also see it as a good sign for my undying ship of Tomas and Grayson…
Graymas… Tomson… Why is the Gray/Xavier ship so much better
sounding? Grayvier—I fucking love gravy.
