Seven Years Later
I hate him. I hate his friends.
And I especially hate him and his friends on nights like this.
The photos on my wall shake again. The one with me holding my
baby boy jostles on the nightstand from the roughhousing coming from next
door.
I groan and roll over in my bed for what feels like the thirteenth time in
the last five minutes.
He can’t be serious.
I knew when my best friend announced that her pro-hockey-playing
brother was moving into the apartment across from us, it spelled nothing
but trouble.
But this…this is just ridiculous.
Another loud bang and I hear the muffled voices of men shouting at
each other followed by boisterous laughs.
Everything in my room vibrates from the bump of the bass coming from
the speakers.
There’s no way my roommate, Libby, is asleep right now with all this
noise.
I throw the covers off of me and toss my legs over the side of the bed,
sliding my slippers on, and reaching for my phone on my nightstand to
check the time.
It’s 1:32 am and I have to work in the morning. For the last few years
I’ve been able to sleep peacefully every night. Now, there isn’t a week that
goes by that Zane O’Connor doesn’t throw a stupid afterparty at his place.
The amount of half-dressed women and beefy hockey boys that I’ve
seen over the last few months is enough to keep me from ever stepping foot
into the Space City arena where Libby’s brother plays for the NHL.
The apartment I share with my best friend is dark right now. When my
son is here, we usually leave at least a hallway light on for him. But right
now, it’s almost pitch black. All except for the small slither of light coming
from the front door that is slightly ajar.
I hear a noise coming from Libby’s room. Either she’s awake or…I feel a
jolt of adrenaline shoot through me.
What if we’re being robbed? Or maybe someone is trying to kidnap
Libby?
A million possibilities are running through my mind as I tip-toe to the
coat closet, my heart pounding, and pull out the first thing I can find that
can be used as a weapon.
My son’s hockey stick…sure. That works.
I hear strange noises coming from Libby’s room that sound like a
woman being restrained. She’s muffled.
Padding down the hallway, I push open the door to her room with the
end of the stick and call out, “Lib, you ok?”
The noises stop suddenly. And I hear someone whisper, “Shhh.”
“Lib, are you in there?” When I hear what sounds like a man clearing
his throat, I instantly panic. Libby never has a guy over. Ever.
Screaming, I push the door open and flip on the lights, wielding the
hockey stick like Excalibur in the direction of the movement on the bed.
