Charli
“What makes a perfect mix?” Sadie—my roommate and cousin—asks
from where she sits patiently on the faded two-seater sofa, her bare
feet tucked underneath her.

With my chin resting on my hand, I closely inspect the four glasses lined
up on the narrow kitchen counter. “For me, it’s something that is
aesthetically pleasing. Nothing too pretty but more naturally understated.” I
stand up straight, brushing back the loose dark strands that have escaped my
messy bun. “Something that teases the taste buds and has you licking your
lips for more.”

Picking up the first glass, I hold it to my nose and breathe in deeply, my
lashes fluttering closed. “And finally, a fresh scent with hidden undertones
that you can’t quite name and have you involuntarily breathing in just a
little deeper.” A sigh slips from my lips as I blink my eyes open again. “A
perfect mix should be an experience that transports you to another place.
And one that you want to repeat again and again.”

“It sounds like you’re describing my ideal man giving me the best orgasm
of my life.” She stifles a giggle behind her hand. “Where do I get one?”
My cheeks lift with the full force of my smile. “Sorry, I can’t help there.
You know I struggle to find a decent one for myself. My track record is
abysmal.”

Brad, the last guy I dated, turned out to be a complete sleazeball and had
me swearing off men and relationships for the rest of the year. Perhaps a bit
of an extreme reaction, given it’s only June.

With a shake of my head, I push thoughts of the two-timing bastard back
to where they belong, filed away in the lessons-learned part of my brain. It’s
not that he broke my heart or anything. We’d only been dating a month. But
that was long enough for me to expect he could keep his dick in his pants
around other women.

Apparently, that was an unreasonable request.
For a few days after, the experience had me wondering if my decent-guy
radar had glitched. But no, the flaw in Brad’s personality wasn’t on me; it
was all him. He was simply a scumbag.
The worst part now is that we still have to work together at Lost Paradise.
Another lesson learned: don’t fool around with people you work with.
“Stop that,” Sadie warns, no longer smiling.

“Stop what?”
“You know. I can tell you’re thinking about him—the asshole. You get
that lemon-sucky-face look.” She waves her hand in my general direction.
A laugh bursts from my lips. Sadie’s use of the English language cracks
me up. “What the hell is a lemon-sucky-face look?”

“You know, like you’ve just sucked on the sourest lemon. Not a little
squeeze, but like you sucked in really deeply. And it scrunches your face up
because it’s nasty.”
