ASH
My best friend was missing and it felt like no one was listening to me. I
wasn’t ignorant to the fact that she was in hiding, I had done my
digging and I knew who she really was. But she had never missed our
catch-ups and she had never not responded to me.
And I also knew from my digging that her asshole ex of a US Marshal
was originally protecting her. He should have been the one looking for her
now and he wasn’t.
After Lexi hadn’t responded for a few days I started to follow Kacey, her
ex, trying to find out if he could lead me to her, but so far there had been
barely any movement from him and certainly nothing that led back to my
best friend.
I wasn’t a stranger to following people, aka stalking someone, so I knew
that I hadn’t been spotted. But my frustration and anger was now at an all
time high.
Seeing Kacey on the move again, I decided on the most reckless option in
order to stay as close as possible this time. If he didn’t take me to her this
time, he was going to get his ass kicked.
Creeping up alongside the standard black government issued sedan, I pull
out the small lock picking kit from my boot. It only takes seconds before
the car door is open, but I don’t open it all the way, just far enough to reach
in and pull on the lever next to the seat and reset the lock.
Closing the door again, I creep to the back of the car where the trunk is
now open slightly. Lifting it, I slide my body into it before closing it again
behind me.
My timing is perfect; I hear Kacey climb into the drivers side only
minutes later and start the car. I can almost smell him all the way in the
trunk, that slightly spicy scent that brings back memories of another man
who smelled similar.
I can feel the vibration of the car as he starts it and then maneuvers it
from the driveway and begins driving toward his destination. Which I hope
is wherever Lexi is.
It feels like forever before I feel the car take a sharp turn and then it jolts
as it enters what I think is a driveway. But he doesn’t turn off the car,
instead idling for a moment until I hear the distant sound of a roller door.
Then the car moves again before pulling to a stop and the sound of the
roller door is interrupted by the sound of Kacey opening his door and
getting out.
Moments later I hear his heavy footsteps stomping away from the car
with murmured voices trailing behind. Turning on the flashlight in my
phone I quickly find the release lever inside the trunk and pull on it.
Grabbing hold of one of the metal bracing bars inside the lid of the trunk to
stop it swinging up, I peek out the gap and, seeing no one, swing out of the
trunk.
