It had not been a good day.
The worst in a long while, in fact. Not the wedding itself, no, that had
been beautiful. But seeing him, after all these years of wanting that very
thing, only to black out and land in his arms. Well, in all the times Jenna
had pictured that moment of reunion over the years, in heated nighttime
dreams and wishful daytime musings, not once had she seen herself in a
dead faint. Crushed against his hard torso, yes, but for entirely different
reasons.

Yet, the universe had seen fit to provide her with the most embarrassing
memory to look back on for years to come.
Jenna had planned to be aloof, to be a serene statue of tightly controlled
anger with a small undercurrent of residual passion… not a vulnerable ball
of emotion and need.

“Such. A. Fool,” Jenna berated herself for both her ridiculously lofty
imaginings and her thoroughly embarrassing reality.
She couldn’t wait to get home and change out of her vintage dress and
kick off the heels that were squashing the toes of her size nine feet. Clearly,
women in the forties were much more petite than her almost six foot frame,
so Jenna had her performance clothes specifically tailored, but shoes were a
bigger problem, quite literally in fact.

Shrugging to get her mind back on
the matter at hand, Jenna prayed that her equally vintage car would start. It
had been having some issues with coming back to life recently. With less of
a roar or even a purr for that matter, Gloria – as she was affectionately
known – seemed to cough and gasp with each turn of the ignition, leading
Jenna to believe that one day soon she would cease to start up altogether,
necessitating a garage visit and money which the nursery school teacher
simply didn’t have to spare.

The universe had thankfully finally decided to give her a break now that
the day was almost done, the stars twinkling in a clear sky above as Gloria
started on the third attempt after a lot of messing around with the choke,
and Jenna was soon pootling down the hill towards her small harbour
cottage in Lower Oakley.

As usual, she slowed to admire the great oak tree
which stood proudly in a field to the side of the road, the midway point
between the two Oakley villages and a part of the landscape and history
here for centuries. Jenna knew that her brother Josh’s girlfriend, Meg, half
believed you could have wishes granted by requesting them of the old oak
but Jenna didn’t buy into that. No, it was good for picnics and to enjoy the
solitude of a quiet afternoon, but Jenna didn’t think there was anything
more spiritual or magical than that…

“Hold on! Is that a fire?” Jenna spoke aloud, as she often did to the small
but determined little convertible, her heartbeat increasing as she braked to a
complete stop, and peered through the darkness. The old windows of the
MG were blurry from years of use and cleaning, so Jenna hesitantly opened
the door. This was a safe area, barely any crime reported all year round, but
still.
