Cherry Hill, a few weeks later
Phaedra did not take Mr. Stewart’s advice.
Nor was she sure about seeing him ever again. Not after the
disastrous events of the last week.

Since meeting her murderous American, Phaedra had thought of little
else, though there were plenty of issues that required her immediate
attention. Olivia, Phaedra’s foster sister and ward of the dowager duchess of
Averell, had been her primary concern. Olivia had reconciled, much to
every Barrington’s dismay, with her maternal grandfather, from whom she’d
been estranged for years. The dreaded Lord Daring. Phaedra should have
guessed he was an appropriate harbinger of doom. He meant to wed Olivia
to Mr. Peter Thomlinson, tedious heir to his earldom and who possessed an
overly large head. Marriage to Mr. Thomlinson would doom Olivia to a life
of boredom surrounded by children with enormous noggins.

Phaedra had to do something to shake some sense into her.
A visit to Elysium was long overdue. That was certain to jostle the
sensibilities of any young lady.

But the tour of the gambling hell hadn’t gone exactly as planned.
Having been caught by Peckham, the gambling hell’s faithful floor
manager, Phaedra had been escorted out while Olivia had been forced to
take refuge in one of the rooms on the second floor. The pleasure rooms.
When Phaedra had returned for Olivia, she’d been surprised to see her sister
with swollen lips, reddened cheeks, and enveloped in a piney scent that
reminded Phaedra of some primal forest.

Highly suspicious.
But Phaedra hadn’t guessed, not then, what had happened. She’d been
too distressed by the fact that Olivia had seemed more determined than ever
to wed Tedious Thomlinson.

Since she thought better when sitting atop a horse, Phaedra had taken a
ride through the park, never once considering a sidesaddle would be more
appropriate than riding astride. Unfortunately, the entire episode had been
witnessed by the incredibly proper Lady Wentworth, who had promptly
called upon the Dowager Duchess of Averell to inform Her Grace that the
youngest Barrington daughter was running wild.

Not that anyone in London should have been surprised. Mama
especially. She’d fed Lady Wentworth a few biscuits then tactfully had Pith
show her out. A lecture had followed on discretion while Phaedra had
pretended to listen.

Ignoring her mother’s admonitions to stay out of trouble, Phaedra had
decided to visit Hagerty’s once more, surprised upon her arrival to find that
every patron of the boxing establishment, including Mr. Hagerty, had shied
away from her as if she had the pox. Even O’Leary, whom she’d thought of
as a friend, wouldn’t look her in the eye. Not even Boggins had greeted her.

There had been no sign of her murderous American or his piano wire, at
any rate, nor had Torrington been boxing that day. Phaedra had left early,
somewhat deflated.
