Sarah
My hands are still fluttering with nerves as I approach the Integration
Zone. I look at the letter on the driver’s seat as though it’s a mortal enemy.
In a way, it is.

I opened the letter at my little condo less than an hour ago, freaked out so
badly I couldn’t think for long, panicked minutes, and then immediately
called my best friend, Emma. She could tell I wasn’t doing well and invited
me to her apartment for comfort food and conversation. I don’t remember
making half the turns between my house and here. My hands seemed to be
on autopilot as my mind spun with worry.

I return to my senses as I pull up to the gate at the entrance to the Zone.
Though Emma has lived here with her orc mate, Kam, for months, I still get
nervous at the military checkpoint that separates the Zone from the rest of
Los Angeles.

Five thousand nagas, minotaurs, wolven, orcs, and other species previously
known only in fairytales dropped to Earth over twenty-five years ago.
Humans dubbed them “Others,” and then rounded them up and shoved
them into this fenced ghetto on the outskirts of the worst part of L.A.
They’ve languished here since then.

The laws have loosened a bit over time. They’re allowed out on work
permits, but they can still be paid one-third of minimum wage, and they
aren’t allowed to live outside the gates. I’ve become familiar with the
Others, but it’s the gangs of Purist protesters who often swarm outside the
gates that terrify me.

I state my business to the National Guard soldier at the gate and she waves
me through. The Zone dwellers try their best to keep it clean, but the
poverty here is stark, and it always seems I’m traveling back in time when I
pass through the gates.

I take that back. It’s not just back in time when I visit this ten-block area
whose buildings were built in the 50s or earlier. But into another world with
blue-scaled nagas, towering horned minotaurs, and shaggy, wary wolven.
I make my way to Emma and Kam’s apartment, letter in hand, and am
relieved to slide inside her place to the smells of her signature Taco Soup.
Her gentle hug helps slow my racing heart.

“So, this is the letter that’s made you lose your mind? Can I read it?” She
thrusts her open palm at me, then slides onto the couch, motioning me to
join her on the other end.

Yes. My head is spinning, and the world is tilting under my feet because of
this official notice I just received about the property in Colorado I inherited
from Aunt Beth three months ago.

Emma has been my best friend since college. We were inseparable, sharing
dating disasters—well, her dating disasters, I didn’t date much, then went
with Liam my whole senior year—as well as navigating college and jobs.
Then she met Kam, who loves her more than life itself. She moved to the
Zone recently when they were married—they call it mated.
