Someone’s Old Lady
Riley
The back door snicked shut and I lifted a slat of my blinds half a centimeter.
Dad trudged through the backyard to the fenceline. Every week he inspected
the fence for signs of neighbor dogs trying to dig under it. The bizarre thing was
that he could have paid someone to do this, but he insisted on doing it himself.
Then again, he believed the adage that if you wanted something done right, you
had to do it yourself. Particularly when it came to dirty work.
I grabbed my phone and wallet, hurried to the fridge, grabbed a water, opened
the freezer door, and made sure his frozen dinner was exactly lined up at the front
of the shelf. He’d moved the bag of frozen peas. If I took the time to search, I’d
probably find that he threw the bag away. At this point, though, I didn’t need them
any longer.
I closed the freezer and raced out the front. My cousin had sent a text I couldn’t
ignore, and it didn’t give me time to dawdle. Still, I couldn’t let Dad know I was
leaving. He’d raise holy hell and I didn’t need that today.
It took Dad at least half an hour to inspect the fence. I should only need five
minutes to jump in my car and drive away, but that assumed I had a normal
vehicle or a father who cared about my health and safety. Instead, I needed at least
ten to get out of the drive.
First, I popped the hood to make sure he hadn’t disconnected my battery. Then I
ran through a few other checks to make sure I could drive away. I lowered the
hood, slow and gentle, not latching it. Once I got out of the drive and down the
road, I would stop at a convenience store to close it completely.
I lived with an overbearing and super-controlling man. It wasn’t easy, and I
desperately wanted out… but that was much easier said than done.
The moment I pulled into the lot for the convenience store, I heard my cell ding
with a text message. It was most likely Aurora, the only person my father
approved of me being around because she had attended the same church as us all
our lives. Aurora and her family had stopped attending, though. I’d thought that
would be the kiss of death for me and I’d have nobody I could count on, but oddly,
he’d talked to Aurora’s dad, and he approved of their moving on to a different
congregation.
I powered off the decrepit Toyota, got out, lifted the hood a few inches and let it
fall with a satisfying bang. Inside the car again, I turned the engine over, but the
‘check engine’ and the oil light came on.
Shit.
This wasn’t exactly anything new. Dad had once fucked with my oil in an effort
to keep me home. I’d called Aurora and she’d told me to get a quart of oil (there
happened to be an extra in the garage). That remedied the situation, but I still had
Mensa take it somewhere for service.
