I stand facing the door of the famed eatery, La Lumière, thinking about the
convoluted web of connections that brought me here. Sure, I hailed a cab,
but this seems like it’s straight out of a sitcom’s blooper reel. Never in my
wildest dreams did I think I’d end up in this restaurant on a blind date,
thanks to my hairdresser’s brother’s yoga instructor’s dog walker, but here I
am.
Most would consider me lucky, with two parents who adore me, a bank
account that never stops growing, and a closet bursting with beautiful
designer clothes that would be the holy grail of any so-called influencer.
Yet, in still moments, when the laughter of my friends has quieted and faded
and the city’s lights dim, I feel the gaping void in my life—a void that no
amount of wealth or fabulous attire can fill. It’s as though I’ve collected all
the stars in the night sky but missed the one that would light up my heart.
For all intents and purposes, I’m a cat lady in waiting. I pause at the door
and pray Mr. Right is inside. I’m not sure I could handle being stood up on a
blind date.

shimmer of hope lightens my heart. The place is beautiful. Chandeliers
bathe the polished tables in a dreamy pastel light while music from a live
pianist sets an unexpectedly carefree and upbeat mood. This could be it. It
has to be better than that impromptu smooch with the pizza delivery guy,
which, embarrassingly enough, led to a bout of mono.
As I’m guided to our table, my breath catches in my throat at the sight
before me. My date’s commanding presence and striking features take my
breath away. At least I hope he’s my date because the only other man sitting
alone is about forty years my senior and seems uninterested in anything but
what’s on his plate. I’m not sure he can even see it through the two-inch
Coke bottle lenses on his glasses, a real blind date. The man I’m laserfocused on is tall and regal with a strong jawline and piercing blue eyes that
seem to see right through me. And thank God, he’s actually looking at me.
Every detail of his appearance radiates confidence and charm, from the
perfectly styled dark hair to the impeccably tailored suit that fits him like a
Givenchy model on a Milan runway. Holy hell, this guy is something to
look at. What if looks are all he has? Or he has bad manners? Now, I’m
getting ahead of myself. Try not to tank the only date you’ve had in months
before you even sit down, Liv.
“Hello,” he says and my knees wobble—who am I kidding, they
practically buckle at his greeting. Is “hello” usually so sumptuous? His
presence is dazzling, a tidal wave of attraction that steals my breath the way
it happens in movies. He’s the type of man that makes you forget your
