Prologue – Saint
Ten Years Ago…
After six months of boot camp and advanced training, I’m finally free to
join the Rangers unit as one of their dozen K9 handlers. I’ve been in
Georgia for the better half of a year, and this will be home base when we
aren’t deployed. Honestly, I’m ready to start the next phase of my life, get
on a plane, and go to parts unknown.
No more tedious training—although, let’s be honest, Hades and I will
train together until one or both of us end up in a pine box or retired.
It’s morbid, but it’s true.
Now that I’m assigned to the Ranger battalion—a unit I fought hard to
get into—I’m ready to cut loose and have some fun before we deploy. Who
knows when the next opportunity to get laid will come?
It’s now or never, soldier.
My sponsor, Sergeant John Vale, texts me.
Get your ass to Hooligans ASAP. Here’s the address.
A pinned location pops up on my phone.
Be there in twenty. I reply before jumping in the shower.
Hooligans is a private club for Ranger battalion members and their
guests. That’s the only reason my eighteen-year-old ass can enter, because
as of today, I’m attached to their infamous unit. Guilt and glory by
association, and far easier than training to become an actual Ranger.
I walk into the place with way too much big dick energy considering the
men assembled and instantly remind myself to tone it down. No reason to
get my ass beat on Day One. Still, I’m eighteen, horny, and feeling
invincible considering this is the best day of my life.
Sergeant Vale, whom I met briefly when I brought Hades over from the
training facility to meet the other dogs this morning, raises his beer and
calls me over. He glances at his watch. “Two minutes to spare.”
Punctuality is a thing with these guys as it is a simple form of discipline.
One of many things I will have to learn while on the job, my training todate only taking me so far amongst these elite warfighters.
He motions to the guy standing next to him. “This is Sergeant Kemp.
He’s also a handler and one of the team leads.”
“Sergeant.” I offer my hand.
He shakes it. “Inside these walls you can call me Kemp.”
“And you call me Vale.” John offers me a beer.
“Am I allowed to drink this?” I eye the frosty bottle, my throat suddenly
parched. I’ve been drinking domestic shit beer since I was four. It’s
practically water to me.
My father’s an alcoholic, as was my mother before
she died of cancer nine months ago, so I come by it honestly. Of course, my
tolerance is way higher than the average eighteen-year-old, but this feels
like a test that I have no intention of failing.
“Inside these walls or the privacy of your room, sure. But no driving
and no brawls. Nothing to get unwanted attention, especially from the MPs
or the local LE.” He pushes it into my hand.
“Thanks.” I take a swig and look around. “So everyone in here is
