LARK
I slid the drinks across the bar to the college boy who couldn’t take his eyes
off my chest and leaned forward to give him a better view of my cleavage
before I asked, “Would you like to donate some money to SummerSnax?”
“What’s that?” he asked as he pulled out his wallet.

“It helps kids who don’t have enough food at home.” I crossed my arms
underneath my boobs and settled them on the bar. “Twenty dollars could
feed two kids for the weekend when they don’t have a school lunch to eat.”
The guy pulled out a twenty and held it out toward me before he finally
looked up at my eyes and smiled. I plucked the cash out of his hand and
smiled back. “Thanks, sweetheart.”
“How much would I have to donate to get a date with you?” he asked as his
gaze went back to my cleavage.

“With me or my tits?” I asked sarcastically.
“They’re a package deal, aren’t they?”
“Sorry! Buffet’s closed,” I said as I spun around and stuffed the twenty into
the donation box on the shelf behind me. I walked away to help another
customer and saw Mike sitting at the end of the bar shaking his head. Once
there was a lull, I stopped in front of him and asked, “What are you smiling
about?”

“I bet no one realizes how many kids your boobs have fed over the years.”
“I just use the tools at hand, my friend,” I said dismissively. “What’s up?”
“Nothing really. I’ll be leaving in the morning before you wake up and
thought I’d stop by and say goodbye tonight.”
“You almost missed me. I’ve got to be at the clubhouse in half an hour, so
I’m about to leave.”

“Your weekly sewing circle?” Mike asked sarcastically.
“No,” I said with a dismissive wave. “We’ve moved on to crocheting.”
“That’s doubtful,” Mike said as he rolled his eyes. “Oh to be a fly on the
wall during one of your meetings.”
“What? Do you think we just sit around and gossip?”
“My guess is there’s plenty of that but even more plotting and planning.
The men in this town should be terrified.”

“I know, right?” I asked with a grin. “Oh! Mom asked me to remind you
that she wants you to come over for a belated birthday dinner when you get
back after this stint. She said she’ll make your favorites.”
“Your mom is still the love of my life. I’m going to convince her to run
away with me someday.”

“You’re not her type at all.”
“I might not be, but the look on your face every time I say that is worth
more than words can say.”

“Pete needs a ride. Do you have time, or should I call an Uber?”
I turned around and looked at my assistant manager, Poppy Grissom, and
shook my head. “That man. I swear.”
“He’s been hitting it hard for the last few weeks. I wonder what’s up,”
Poppy said.
