MATTHEW
This café is almost too crowded for me to work. One table left in the
entire place, and that’s because it is next to me. The angry-looking man
with little patience, a lot of tattoos, and no fucks to give about being nice to
these people. Five people have come to the table next to me, looked over at
me and left the building entirely. I’m going to have to tip all the barista
before I leave, but it’s worth it to keep a little distance. I hate getting to
know them and then watching their short life spans end before I realize that
fifty or sixty years have passed. I hate it even more because it reminds me
she is still gone.

Its been so long since she died. The gods must have lied to convince me
to do their bidding. Someone sits at my table and I look up to find one of
the damned liars before me. “Hello Odin, what has drawn you here to
bother me today?”
He raises a brow at me. “You know I can crush you with a thought. Why
do you tempt me?”

“Because it has been hundreds of years and still not so much as a
whisper of her. I would be content to join her wherever she may be now.”
The old one-eyed bastard laughs at me. He places his hand flat on the
table and a file appears under it. He slides it over to me and, withdrawing
his hand, leans back to sit with his arms folded across his chest. “Your next
target.”

Opening the file, I scan the contents. Local priest. Church not far from
here. The picture shows an older man with a plain face. According to the
file, he is working on a high profile project that they want more information
about. Just seeing the guy makes my stomach rumble. It’s been a month
since my last feeding, and I can’t drink just any blood. No. The gods
decided to be helpful and make sure I only crave the tainted blood of
desecrated priests. “I’ll take care of him.”

“We want you to keep him alive long enough to find out what they are
doing. We are hearing rumblings and none of it good.”
The timbre of his voice changed, and I study him. He is truly bothered
by this one. What the fuck is this guy into that is bothering the gods? “What
kind of rumblings?”

He shakes his head. “We don’t want to influence your search. It’s better
if you draw your own conclusions.”

I can’t stop my eyes from rolling at that. “Fine, but it would be a lot
faster to find if I knew what I was trying to find.”

He nods and stands. “We prefer thorough over speedy. One of us will
check in with you soon.”

I watch him walk out of the café. The bastard grins at me as he passes
the window. I can’t imagine why. I hear the bell over the door go off again,
but I ignore it. What could have them so wound up about this guy that they
won’t tell me what I’m looking for?
