Castle Trossachs, Scotland, Mid-January 1296
The wind howled in protest as Kelper, the earl’s house steward, forced
shut the thick oaken door that kept foul weather at bay. He then turned to
help Alpin Craigdon, captain of the earl’s guard, remove his cloak and
gloves.

“Thank you Kelper.”
“’Tis welcome ye are. What brings ye to the castle from the border in
such bothersome weather? Have ye time to sup with us, or must ye return to
the border immediately?”
“I’ve urgent need to speak with the earl, but I’ll stay the night. Please
have cook serve an extra meal at supper. I’ll sleep in the barracks, so no
need to bother Mistress Nettles. I’ll leave after breaking my fast tomorrow.
Now where is the earl?”

Kelper tossed his head in the direction of the gargantuan hearth at the far
end of the great hall where the firelight revealed four people in shadow. At
this distance it was only possible to determine that three were women. The
fourth, unmistakable because of his size, was Lord Iver MacTavish, Earl of
Trossachs. The earl was said to rival Longshanks in height and have twice
the sassenach monarch’s breadth. Having never seen the man, Alpin could
not say.

“There’s mead and bread by the hearth. Eat while himself finishes with
his women. ‘Tis the laundresses this night. Says he’ll no have time for the
kitchen wenches until tomorrow evening. A wonder, it is. That man’s
staying power, and nary a whimper of complaint from the women.”
“Unless, it is moaning. There is not enough earl to serve them all.”
“Aye.” The steward nodded. “But he is, think on it, only one man.”
“And one of a kind at that. There is no other, baron, earl or duke I’d wish
to serve than Wild Iver. And since he treats all his folk well, I’d best go tell
him the news.”

Kelper’s eyes lit up “News?”
Alpin grinned. “Aye, you’ll hear soon enough, but not afore his wild
earlship.”

“Then get ye on with it. Not a dram of decent gossip has been heard
since himself returned last summer and announced he’d married one o’ the
MacKai Jewels by proxy but dinna know when she’d be arriving at
Trossachs.”

“Aye it’s all the fault of those rotten MacShennan’s. Wild Iver should
have been enjoying his wedding night. Instead, he had to hasten home to
fight off the MacShennan’s attempt to reclaim Blue Pool Dale.”
“Old news, that. Go tell himself what ye must, so we can all learn of it
the sooner.”

Alpin nodded at the older man and strode off toward the hearth. As he
neared, he could make out the features of the three fetching wenches busy
amusing their earl. They weren’t so much Wild Iver’s women exclusively.
