MID-FEBRUARY
“Number eleven, Arlo King is primed and more than ready to see
through the end of his college career. Taking over the pitcher’s
mound and a five-year national title from his brother Nicholas, at age
twenty-two, he was a late starter with the promise of upholding the family
legacy. Now, three years later, twenty-five, he finds himself at the tail end of
a failing run, desperate for a championship.”

Nothing was worse than the nonsense that rolled through the radio and
into my car on game days, yet I always found myself sitting there, listening
to it like it was gospel. There was never anything I could do to stop myself
from flicking the radio on and listening to them tear me to shreds while
thousands of other listeners all over campus agreed with them.
I rolled my hands over the steering wheel and tried pulling all my tight
muscles loose as I stared at the stadium. A massive building of concrete and
navy blue coated steel that hung over my head like a reminder I wasn’t
good enough to be there.

Home of the Harbor University Hornets.
Until the year I transitioned from backup to starting pitcher, the Hornets
had been the best and only winning team that Harbor had to offer. But I had
dragged both cleats through lousy karma on my way to the pitcher’s mound
because we hadn’t seen a championship since I had taken over for my
brother.

All the drive had been sucked from the team, and we were left with
nothing but a group of players that didn’t care how many runs or outs we
had. Their worries were more extensive than the score, and I wished
desperately that I felt the same way, but every game was a step closer to
fulfilling a dream that I wasn’t even sure was mine most days, but it was the
only dream I knew.

A knuckle rapped against the window of my Mustang. Silas hovered just
outside the driver’s side door for me as I collected my bag and threw it over
my shoulder. I took one last deep breath before exiting and slamming the
door abruptly, causing him to flinch.
“You’re late,” he barked at me, blinking his serious blue eyes in my
direction as he scratched a line into his scruffy, patchy, unkempt brown
beard.

“You look ridiculous with a mustache.” I shrugged, taking a peek at the
time on my wristwatch. Silas groaned loudly, following me in his teamissued black Hornet polo and navy blue cap. “What? I thought we were
pointing out the obvious,” I tossed him a tight smile over my shoulder as we
approached the players’ entrance.

He leaned around me, swiped the black box to unlock it, and filed into the
tunnel before me. “Arlo,” he turned, pushing his hand against my chest to
stop our movement toward the locker room. “He’s here,” Silas’ tone turned
to ice.
