MORRIGAN
Aegean Manor
“I wonder how much I could sell you for?”
Lord Elijah Aegean’s high-pitched arrogant voice was like the
sound of nails on a chalkboard. It stirred Morrigan from her thoughts,
scattering the daydream she was having of dark hair and stormy eyes
belonging to a handsome man she had met once. He visited her dreams
often, but she didn’t know his name and doubted she would ever meet him
again.
Being thaber (marked as non-magical) Morrigan had limited time
outside of her home, and she knew that someday her mother would decide
she was no longer of use to their family. The fact that she hadn’t been sent
away upon being marked always confused Morrigan, and on the worst days,
she wished she hadn’t been kept. Despite the knowledge that her mother
could give her away on a whim, the suddenness of Elijah’s question was
jarring.
“Mother is looking for you.” Morrigan’s stomach sank as she
looked up from where she carefully rolled out the dough for biscuits. Elijah
stood in the doorway, his hands shoved into his pockets, and his upper lip
curled into a scowl.
“Immediately?” It was rare that their mother called for her
explicitly. The fact that she had sent Elijah to collect her raised her concern
even more.
“Of course,” Elijah responded so plainly, his annoyance at the fact
that he had been sent as an errand boy to retrieve her was clear with the roll
of his eyes.
Morrigan knew he preferred to be anywhere but in the kitchen
where she spent most of her time. Brushing flour from her hands and skirt,
she nodded and stepped away from the table to follow.
“Mother has decided today is the day,” Elijah snickered as if he
knew some inside joke, “not your day, mind you. There is nothing
beneficial that you will get out of this. I don’t know what you’ve done to
displease her, but I can’t wait to see what she does with you.”
Anger rose within Morrigan, but she knew better than to argue
with him.
Ever since she had been marked, she had learned what her place
was, and arguing was out of place.
Culling was a process that had been implemented decades ago to
decide the magical worth of children once they hit the age of thirteen.
Elijah, the eldest and only boy, had proven adept at creating and controlling
ice, a prominent power for House Burgess. Mae had discovered her ability
to heal when she was young.
Like Elijah, Amara, Morrigan’s twin sister,
was capable of ice manipulation. Morrigan, however, had failed every test
that had been tried on her. All records dictated her to be powerless, as did
the horned, antlered deer brand that had been pressed on her shoulder.
