THE CALM BEFORE a storm was something a Romani could sense, but why
here…why now?
Xander Tsakis had encountered this feeling only once before, when his
life had taken a huge turn for the better, after a remarkable couple called
Eleni and Romanos Tsakis scooped him up from the gutter and brought him
home to raise as their son. What more could he ask of life now? Thanks to
the miracle of their love, he had everything most men strived for and never
had the chance to attain.

What form the impending storm would take remained to be seen, Xander
reflected, raking a hand through his unruly black hair as he settled back on
the plush, well-padded seat in his state-of-the-art custom-built helicopter.
The aircraft was carrying him to the closest he’d ever come to a family
home—the tiny island of Praxos, set like a gem in the sea off the west coast
of Greece.

He hadn’t always travelled in such luxury as this. Stealing a lift on the
back of a refuse truck had been the closest he’d come to transport as a child.
His rise from the gutter had been meteoric, though not without tragedy. The
recent loss of his adoptive father, billionaire philanthropist Romanos Tsakis,
was the latest in a series of losses that had dogged him throughout his life.
Some might say his early years had been unusually hard, but hard had been
his norm as a child.

Raised in a brothel by a series of women had accustomed him to change,
and to the impermanence of everything in life, especially love. His Romani
mother was said to have been barely sixteen when she’d given birth to him.
A lack of care had led to her death, leaving newborn Xander to be passed
around the brothel like the latest novelty.

By the time he was six he had
determined to forge a better life for himself, a desire fuelled by hanging
around five-star venues when he was kicked out of the brothel at night, to
prevent the local police, who frequented the establishment, from asking
awkward questions about his presence there. Watching the rich and famous
pour out of their limousines in fragrant splendour had been all it took to
convince a street urchin that this was the life he craved.

Impossible though his dream might have seemed, his luck had changed
on the day Romanos Tsakis had spied him rifling through the bins for food
at the back of the Michelin starred restaurant where Romanos and his wife
Eleni had just been celebrating their wedding anniversary. Being accosted
by a strange man was nothing new for six-year-old Xander.

Even in rags
and filth, he was a good-looking child, but he was unusually savvy for one
so young, which was how he had stayed safe on the streets. If the gypsy
blood running through his veins had not insisted that this was the chance he
had been waiting for, he might have settled for a cold meal of scraps.
Thankfully, time had proved his instinct about Eleni and Romanos
correct, though his life before they had become a part of it had scarred him
