Mayce bolted from the medical bay, nearly forgetting to duck under
the low doorway, and raced down the narrow corridors. The ship
was quiet, but his heartbeat roared in his ears as he barreled through it like a
travosti bean in a can toward the cockpit that served as the command deck.
His itchy skin could wait. A female was in danger.

He almost ran full tilt into Skinny, the big heavy-worlder taking a quick
step back.
“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” Skinny called out, but Mayce was
already halfway down the corridor, taking the steps to the command deck
two at a time.

A blast of cold air from the door mechanism washed over his face as he
rushed through the opening door and onto the command deck. Instantly, his
gaze cut across to his brother, Fin, who leaned against the railing that
separated the pilot’s seats from the main deck. Clad in combat pants, a shirt
with the sleeves ripped off, and his hair long enough to cover the tattoos
over the sides of his scalp, he looked nothing like the king he was… had
been.

“Mayce?” Fin looked up to frown. “What’s up? You’re not on duty until
the next shift.”
Mayce found himself the center of attention as both Zero and Eric
turned from their consoles to look at him. T’Raal, the Warborne’s leader,
looked up from across the small holo-unit that served as the command
center.
Mayce turned toward him. “There was a message in the medical facility.

From Lina —”
“Lina?” Eric broke in. “What about Lina?”
“I was in the medical room, and I received a distress call from Lina,” he
said, meeting their looks squarely. He didn’t bother to explain why he’d
been in there. He was not explaining that his skin was dry because he’d
been out of the water too long. They were all battle-hardened mercenaries.
They’d laugh their assess off if he complained about a bit of itchy,
especially the giant cyborg. With that much metal in his body, those implant
sites had to be as irritating as draanth.

“She’s in trouble,” he said, ignoring the fact that Eric was breathing
down his neck. Draanth, he hadn’t realized humans could get so big. “She’s
on Galinor Five. There’s… there’s something about an alien… and
experiments. She sounded terrified.”
A tense silence fell across the command deck. He ignored it and
watched T’Raal with a level gaze. He might not be fully one of them yet,
but he had his own experiences and skillset.

Even so, even after his many years of training with the warrior monks at
Kryzaquor, T’Raal was still one scary son of a bitch. The big mercenary
leader wore his experience and lethality like a mantle, but Mayce didn’t let
that bother him.

He rocked slightly on his heels, hands clasped behind his back and his
expression neutral. The need for approval, once a driving force in his life,
had faded a long time ago… along with youthful hopes and dreams, all
crushed by the brutal reality of the Navarrian courts.
He was here to relay a message, not to seek validation, so this silent
assessment thing they were doing didn’t bother him at all.
