THE BLARE of my phone alarm rouses me from sleep and I toss over in the
bed, searching for where it’s disappeared under my pillow.
Something sharp pricks my finger.
“Ouch.” I pull it back, looking at it through bleary eyes and noticing a
spot of blood welling up there. I stick my finger in my mouth to try and
soothe the sting, but it doesn’t do much. A small groan escapes me as I sit
up and take in the sight around me.
Roses.
Everywhere.
They cover every single inch of my dorm room, from the bed all the
way over to my desk and into my small bathroom.
“Just what I need,” I mutter. A few of the petals tumble away as I pull
on my blanket.
A loud rumbling snore comes over the blaring of my alarm and I let out
a small laugh at just how deep asleep Onion is. The corgi is sprawled over
far more of my bed than one tiny dog has any right to take up, blissfully
unaware that I’ve managed to fill the entire room with flowers.
My eyes clear a little and I spot my phone between two particularly
thorny-looking roses. I grimace and grab it, finally managing to shut off the
alarm.
I snap a photo of the roses and head to the group chat with my
flatmates.
< Anyone need any flowers before I clear them out? > I hit send, not
really expecting any of them to say yes. And even if they do, I can just
make another bunch of flowers appear. One of the perks of being a fairy.
The nos come in surprisingly quickly given how early it is. I wouldn’t
expect half of my flatmates to be awake yet, but apparently, they are.
I sigh and wave my hand across the room. The flowers ripple around
me, as if being caressed by a passing breeze. It’s a beautiful effect, but it
doesn’t do much.
Great. I forgot about this part of the flowering. I’m going to have to
remove them all by hand if I want to get my room back.
Onion lets out a loud snore, making me jump.
I roll my eyes at the corgi. She can seriously sleep through anything.
An alert pops up on my phone and I swipe it open, expecting to find a
message from one of my friends, only to be disappointed by it being an
email from the academy.
I click on it, bringing up a list of events for the term. Vaguely curious, I
scan through them, not at all surprised to find the usual mix of fundraisers,
social events, and competitions. There seems to be some kind of cooking
event run by GhoulSoc, which I didn’t even realise was a thing, and a
competition by FlowerSoc coming up. Nothing particularly thrilling about
that. I don’t really like the sound of a gardening club. What’s the point when
I can make flowers appear with a wave of my hand?
