A lot of faith was being placed in me, and I couldn’t let anyone down. Even
though we’ve been friends for years, I have to admit I was a little surprised
when Damon invested the money in my company without a second thought.
He believed in me, and he knew that I could do wonderful things with
my security company the way he had done with his back home. Damon and
my sister were married now, they had a new home, a new child… and I
don’t know. As happy as I am for my sister and my new brother-in-law, I
finally felt like it was time for me to search for my own life.

Stonecurb was a few hours’ drive from home, and I had done a lot of
research on crime rates in each area. Stonecurb didn’t have a scary amount
of crime, but it did have some, and the one thing it didn’t have was a nearby
security company.

So here I was, standing in the living room of my new apartment as I
stared at the ridiculous furniture my sister had ordered. Shopping for
furniture would take too much time away from my day-to-day, and as an
up-and-coming business, I couldn’t afford to do that. She knew that, and it
was a surprise for me.

“Where do you want this?” One of the movers grunted as he brought in
three boxes labeled bedroom.
“Right through there, man. Thanks.” I waved him into the hallway.
Once the movers had finished bringing in the minimal boxes I’d brought
with me, I made it a point to head into the office. It was coming along
nicely, and we officially opened for business the next day, Monday, to start
the week fresh. Following Damon’s careful advice, I sent fliers to nearly
every home in the wealthy suburb city a week before, letting them know of
the opening business, hours, and numbers, and including an excellent
photograph of my face.

We had received a few voicemails so far requesting quotes. As
promised, we would get back to them on Monday. From what I could tell,
none would be very expensive jobs. As a new business, that wasn’t very
affirming, but it was a good start.

As I drove through the neighborhood, I could see smiling faces all
around me. Families played in their front yards, dogs were being walked
around the neighborhood, cars were being washed in the driveway… it was
all very mundane—and needed. I came from a small town, but this place
had a different vibe. More of a community. It felt like it was exactly what I
needed.

One house stood out from all the others. It was two stories tall and all
black with small white accents. It’s size was nearly double that of all the
other homes next to it, with a lawn so green it almost looked like fake grass.
The homes around it were just as beautiful, but there was something
different about this one. A newer red convertible was parked in the
driveway, but there was no sign of anyone around.
Interesting.
