Oliver was in hell.
Hell looked a lot like a sunny Montana lake, and if Oliver had
been asked to design an eternity of torture and misery, he might have
suggested lakes more filled with fire, or splinters in the bottoms of his feet,
or having his fingernails peeled back one by one.
Nothing he could have imagined would have been this awful, despite
the sweet autumn breeze and gorgeous view.
“Can you tell me a little about the monster of Belle Lake?”
“Um,” he said intelligently, staring at the camera.
“Ignore Johnny and the camera,” Molly told him kindly. “You can look
at me. We’re just having a conversation. The camera isn’t even on yet, he’s
just testing the lighting here.”
Oliver wasn’t sure if he should believe her, and anyway, looking at
Molly didn’t help him any.
She was so adorable and earnest, and Oliver hadn’t managed a single
full length sentence with her that morning since she’d arrived with her
assistant, Johnny.
He cleared his throat and remembered his younger sister Angela’s wellmeant advice. Imagine she’s naked.
Since Oliver had been picturing exactly that since they met, this did
very little for either his calm or his cognitive ability.
Any of his brothers would be better at this, or Angela, or one of their
shaggy, mule-brained horses. Justin had all but begged to be interviewed.
But Curtis was making Oliver show Molly and Johnny around, because it
was his fault she was here.
“You’re the dumbass who got caught on camera,” Curtis had said, full
of fury. “You’re the one who gets to clean up the mess.”
Oliver didn’t think the evidence was that damning. It was just a blurry
handheld video of a big furry white shape crashing through some
underbrush. It could have been anything.
Even a yeti.
The public had seized onto the idea that it was Bigfoot’s white-furred
cousin, and that was what had drawn the internet-famous cryptid hunter
Molly Flash, host of the popular YouTube channel, “Flash Find,” here to
Belle Lake Lodge.
Oliver thought it would be easiest to start the tour of the lodge at the
boat dock, hoping that Molly and her cameraman, Johnny would decide the
hike down and back up was as much as they were willing to do. He was
surprised that she had heard of the Belle Lake monster, and wasn’t sure how
much to say.
“A…a couple people have seen a big sea monster here. Except, of
course it isn’t a sea, so it wouldn’t be a sea monster, ha ha. A lake
monster?” Oliver knew that his laugh sounded forced. He really hoped that
Johnny wasn’t recording. “Usually in the morning, when it’s misty. It’s
probably just driftwood.”
“How big is Belle Lake?” Molly asked.
Oliver had lived his entire life on a bluff overlooking it and had no
actual idea. “It’s…uh…” He couldn’t say that it took about thirty minutes to
swim across it, because could a normal human even do that? How fast did
humans swim? “Maybe three miles across?” Was that close to right?
