Delora wiggled her shoulders side-to-side while splaying and stretching her
fingers, both done in an attempt to free herself from the rope bindings
around her wrists.
As she was ushered through the dense forest, her heavy breaths came out
like snorted muffles against the cloth that had been tied around her head. As
it absorbed the saliva within her drying mouth, her throat felt sticky.
The ground was muddied from the rain that had drizzled recently, and her
dress, which had been dull, grey, and plain, was now dirty from walking.
Though the top of her was only dirty due to the light sweat she had, the
bottom of her dress was caked in mud from falling to her knees multiple
times.
She knew her long, black hair was matted terribly by what she had seen
fall across her brow, obscuring her vision more times than she could count.
It was also tangled with twigs and stray leaves.
The canopy of leaves above glittered with soft sunlight on the early
morning of this Autumn day. It was mostly shaded, which caused the breeze
that rustled the leaves to feel chillier than it was. Snow hadn’t begun to fall
yet, but she was sure in two or so weeks, the pretty powder would start to
blanket the ground.
That only left them with the sounds of dead leaves and sticks to loudly
crunch under their footsteps. There were around twenty-two people making
this walk, and most of them were armoured soldiers.
She’d fought against her captors despite knowing it was futile. They
thought she deserved this, and, in some way, so did she.
The longer they walked, the more her struggles eased.
Not once had they come across any Demons. She was sure they would
have shoved her in front of it and ran for their lives if they had.
It’s why they were here, after all.
On the first night they had set out with her bound, about a day’s walk
from their relatively large town, they’d set up a campfire for the night.
Almost everyone had been on watch for their surroundings since the
darkness brought hissing and wailing terrors.
Only one person had stayed in the camp to watch over her with a horribly
twisted sneer of disgust.
The middle-aged man who’d remained as her guard had wrinkles of
laughter around his eyes and frown marks across his forehead from years of
stress. His brown stubble beard hid most of his age, but his green eyes said
he had little charm behind his dark expressions.
Every time he stared at her, Delora narrowed her eyes with contempt, just
as she did now when the man turned to glance over his shoulder.
When he saw her expression, he lifted his eyes to the man behind her
with a certain look. The soldier behind her shoved his elbow into her back
to force her to stumble.
