Worrying Signs
The police car was a bad sign. It was easy to spot from a long way off
and its parked position outside the home of Allen Gibson sent a worrying
message. It was not nearly so concerning as the coroner’s van parked
behind it.
I was returning from a lunch date with Mike Atwell, an old friend who
had recently chosen to leave his career in the Kent Police to pursue a new
life as a private investigator. He’d taken over my old detective agency. I
hadn’t exactly planned to abandon it, but the call of globetrotting adventure
and the affections of a certain cruise ship captain caused me to leave the
country and I was only back in England now because I chased a mystery all
the way here.
Driving my car, a vintage Aston Martin, my butler (and best friend in the
world) turned his head just a touch to ask, “Should I pull over, madam?”
I pursed my lips. The presence of the police, even outside the home of a
person I know, ought not to be any of my business. However, I am known
as a sleuth, and though I cannot tell you where the skill, or ability to solve
mysteries comes from, I have long since given up denying I possess it.
“Yes, please, Jermaine.” I made a snap decision.
I have known Allen for many years for we reside in the same small
village tucked into the southeast corner of England where the winters are
mild and the countryside is green. For as long as I can remember he has
held the position of church treasurer. That’s not his job, obviously, it’s an
unpaid position. Racking my brain to recall his profession, I couldn’t recall
if it was something in insurance, or banking, though it was definitely money
related.
Jermaine glided to the curb and stopped, quickly exiting so that he could
open and hold my door for me.
My eyes were yet to leave the front of Allen’s house which was why I
was looking the right way when two men came out with a body on a
stretcher. Not that the body was on display, you understand, but what else
could it be? It was clearly heavy, given the strain and perspiration I could
see, and unless Allen had been on a crash diet, he wasn’t the lightest of
men.
Biting down on an upwelling of sadness, I slipped out of my car and told
myself not to jump to conclusions. I didn’t know for sure that it was Allen.
It was though, I found out two seconds later when Mavis from the post
office spotted me.
“You gonna figure out who killed him then?” she asked, crossing the
road to get to me.
You might think the presence of the police car was an indication of foul
play, but I know the authorities are called to the scene of any unexpected
death.
I said, “Hello, Mavis,” as a formality, since I hadn’t seen her in months,
but quickly added, “Is it Allen?”
She nodded, her face showing little emotion. “I heard he was stabbed.”
Working in the village post office which doubles as the village store,
