Her hair fluttered in the wind, the silvery locks picking up traces of
orange, yellow and red for the glow all about her.
Fires burned as far as the eye could see. Everywhere, peaks of
flame rose high into the darkening sky. Xira strode amidst the raging pyres,
the foul fires dredging up hateful smells that made even her battle-hardened
guts churn. She had ordered the bodies of the fallen burned—as dignified an
end as any warrior could ask for—and now set her sights on matters of
graver importance.

If she was to be a queen, then the time had come for her to settle into
her new role.
Ares had left quite the mess in his wake, with no clear means for his
successor to assume control. Probably, he had never ruled with a mind
towards empowering a successor and had considered his rule evergreen.
The god of war had enjoyed a long and successful reign teeming with brutal
victories, and had wielded nigh unparalleled power in his finest seasons.
But, as was always the case, his successes were not to be everlasting.
Now, it fell to Xira to pick up the pieces.

Of particular interest amidst the wealth of documents and belongings
the god of war had left behind were Ares’ battle plans—detailed writings
which outlined his philosophies on war and which fleshed out numerous
contingencies that Xira was sure to find useful in defending the Fire
Kingdom in the future. No treasure in his horde, no jewel in any crown,
could match the value of these plans, and she set out through the smogchoked battlefield after them.
The kingdom was in a delicate phase. She had no choice but to hasten to
the reins, lest the region fall into chaos.

X’
steps of the royal quarters. These she took two or three at a time, climbing
toward the gilded entrance doors whose panels of pale, white stone had
been adorned with intricate bas reliefs detailing various of Ares’ military
victories. The form of the war god, chiseled into the stone, possessed an
almost uncanny liveliness, and she couldn’t help but feel that the effigy
stared harshly at her as she approached. The war god seemed to pass
judgement upon her, to dismiss her even in death.

What would Ares say if he could see me at this moment? She wondered.
Following in his footsteps, inheriting the Fire Kingdom after defeating
Hephaestus… She frowned a little as she reached the door and gave it a
forceful shove. The sound of the night breeze as it sang through the boughs
of the flowering trees in the nearby garden reminded her of Ares’ dismissive
laugh.

The halls of the royal quarters were brightly lit; despite Ares’ absence, the
Ena attendants had kept the wall-mounted torches burning, and these
introduced a stable glow throughout the halls of stone and marble. She
paused in the entryway, peering down one passage after another, and
wondering where best to begin her search for the much-needed plans.
