Elbistan, Winter 1448
Sitting almost four thousand feet high between Anatolia’s mountains, the
Beylik of Dulkadir is no stranger to cold winters. Neither are its people,
but the winter of 1448 holds the whole of Elbistan in a tight grip.
This is the coldest winter Sittişah has seen in her fourteen years. She skips
from stone to stone on the path from the sarayi to the hammam under the
red morning sky, watching her breath turn into steam as it hits the cold air.
She laughs, and blows out loops of steam like she’s smoking. White with
frost, the dry grass crunches under her feet.

Winters are harder in Rumelia, they say. And longer. They have snow and
ice, unlike here in Anatolia. But, snow or no snow, Sittişah loves winter in
the Elbistan sarayi. The hot braziers glow with embers and soften the chill,
the silver cups with sweet hot tea warm her fingers, and the fur-trimmed
velvet kaftan brings out her lovely complexion. And then there’s the
hammam.

Since today is such a special day, Sittişah plans to spend her morning here,
making herself extra pretty. Her sisters will do the same, of course, but they
can’t compare. Unless the sultan’s messenger is blind — and she shouldn’t
be — they can’t but notice Sittişah’s sparkling green eyes and her splendid
red curls. Everybody says she looks just like her mother did, fifteen years
ago, when she caught Father’s eye and became his favorite.

Not like her sisters are ugly — they are all Dulkadir princesses, born from
the most beautiful women that Süleyman Bey’s men could find him — but
none of them has Sittişah’s exuberant light. She’s been her father’s favorite
since before she could walk, so he encouraged her antics and her attitude.
He held her on his knees to play with her, his belly shaking with laughter,
like he did with her brothers, but not with her sisters. Never.

Yesterday, he called her to his rooms.
Laying on his side on the green brocade pillows with his head in his hand,
he measured her with his shrewd, narrow eyes as she kneeled to kiss his
hand. “I have a suitor for you.”

“For me?”
“For one of my daughters. And I can’t think about anyone more worthy.”
She fell on her knees to thank him. “Thank you, Father. I take it he’s a
suitor you approve of?”

Her father laughed so hard his belly shook like it had a life of its own. “Do I
approve? There is none better. This is the best husband any girl could hope
for. He’s a catch like no other, and I hope you’ll get him.”

Sittişah bowed deeply, touching her forehead to the marble floor. “Thank
you, Father. May I ask who that is?”

Her father looked left and right, then spoke so low she could barely hear
him. “He’s the future sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He’s young and
handsome and has an amazing future ahead of him. His name is Mehmed.”
