Present Day
RACHEL MILLER WAS AWOKEN AT 3:00 A.M. BY THE SOUND OF her seven-yearold whispering in her ear that she needed to go to the bathroom. Rachel
tried to stifle her annoyance as she untangled herself from the sheets,
careful not to disturb her sleeping husband.
“Come on, kiddo,” she whispered, reaching for Emma’s hand and
leading her back down the hall to the bathroom directly adjacent to her
daughter’s bedroom. Rachel tucked her in shortly after, and returned to her
own bed, only now she was, frustratingly, wide awake.
Four hours later, an exhausted Rachel stood naked in her closet debating
between two nearly identical black Theory pantsuits. She grabbed one
down, and then reached for a cream-colored blouse, debating whether the
tone washed out her pale skin. She put it back and selected an emerald
green silk tank. She knew it brought out her eyes, and green was a lucky
color, wasn’t it?
“Brush your teeth! Are you brushing yet? Twenty minutes, guys,”
Rachel called out to the ether, as she clasped her bra around her waist.
Emma, fresh as a daisy, came bounding in, her reddish-blond curls
shooting out all over her head. “Mommy, I see your boobies!”
“Emma, sweetie, did you do your teeth?” Her daughter breathed out her
proof. “Okay, go downstairs and eat.”
Rachel’s ten-year-old son, Max, shouted from down the hall that he
couldn’t find his Chromebook.
“Dan, help him, please. I can’t do this this morning,” Rachel shouted in
response, as she walked into her bathroom to continue getting ready.
“It’s down here,” Dan called from the kitchen, otherwise paying no
mind to his family bustling around him.
Rachel stared into the mirror and began to diligently apply her makeup.
She had gotten away with little more than blush and mascara when she was
younger. The circles under her hazel eyes now required serious concealer
and she had swapped out her sheer lip gloss for actual lipstick. She pulled
back her shoulder-length auburn hair into a sleek bun, thankful as always
for the advent of keratin treatments. Aside from the extra ten pounds that
she hadn’t been able to shake post Emma, Rachel was mostly satisfied with
her appearance. She grabbed her favorite heels, giving her petite stature
three extra inches for confidence, then walked downstairs and into the
kitchen.
“I didn’t hear you come to bed,” Rachel said to her husband, as she
poured herself coffee. “Did you stay up late?”
“Nope,” Dan said, looking up from his phone. “You probably passed out
five minutes after you went upstairs, like you always do.”
Rachel ignored his comment and sat for a minute next to him at the
counter, silently running through the argument she had to deliver in court
that day. “Damn, I forgot to make lunch.”
Dan looked up again, briefly considering her, perhaps wondering if this
involved him, then returned to scrolling on Instagram.
Rachel jumped up and quickly assembled two turkey sandwiches, and
threw them into her children’s lunch bags with a clementine and a pack of
mini Oreos each. That would have to do.
