This was not happening. Every single window was iced over. Both the
front and the back door was iced over. It wasn’t a thin sheet of ice, either.
The ice looked like it was at least an inch thick.
There wasn’t a way for me to escape, with the ice being an extra barrier.
“Let me out,” I hissed, slamming my palms against the thick layer of ice
separating me from the door and preventing my exit.
A groan sounded behind me, causing me to falter in my banging. I
looked back to ensure they were still lying motionless on the floor. The two
men I’d spent the last two weeks with — the two men who led me to
believe so much.
I wasn’t even sure who they were anymore. Jin had said – “No,” I
mumbled, scrambling into the kitchen. It didn’t matter what he had said. I
could pick apart their words once I was out. If I wanted to pick apart either
of their words later.
I just needed to get out and on my way to Rosalyn.
Because she was real.
This whole time, she was real. And I was absolutely the shittiest mother.
But I would find her. Somehow, I would find her.
“Come on, come on,” I frantically pulled out drawers and opened the
cabinets, looking for something to cut away the ice.
As much as I wanted to grab a knife, it would probably slip and slice my
hand or fingers while trying to stab at a wall of ice. So instead, I found a
circular utensil holder and dumped it across the counter, taking a meat
tenderizer from the pile.
I ran back to the door just as Oliver started groaning. Jin was still
unmoving and silent. I just didn’t know how much longer until Oliver woke
up. I needed to get out.
Hefting the mallet over my head, I swung it toward the ice encasing the
handle. It didn’t even make a dent in the ice. But it did send a vibration up
my arm. The damned ice looked like it shimmered as I shook my arm out.
“Come on. Break.” My back teeth ground together as I took another
swing at the door, swinging from the side like a baseball bat.
I could hear Oliver moving behind me; low moaning noises were my
only warning that he was waking up. I didn’t know if he was like Jin. If he
had magic, too.
This whole time, Jin had magic. Clearly, nothing good was coming from
magic. It was quickly ruining my life.
Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes and focused on my current task. I
was breaking through the ice and leaving the house. I couldn’t do that if I
thought about either of those men.
Breakdown later.
Breakout now.
