The wolf stood at the edge of the forest. The dappled evening sunlight
playing over its mottled gray and brown fur turned the animal into barely a
shadow beneath the canopy. Although the wolf would go unseen by almost
any gaze, its dark bronze eyes watched intently, observing the happenings
in the clearing just beyond the line of trees. Its ear twitched at the sound of
raised voices, muffled by the undergrowth. Its nose flared at the scent of
sweat and musky oils.
If we’re going to make our move, we need to make it soon, Clell said.
Just a moment longer, his wolf replied.
Clell’s wolf stepped forward, its powerful shoulders rippling beneath
thick fur which slid silently through the undergrowth, moving closer to the
edge of the woods. Both Clell and his wolf remained steady as they
watched one of the two burly men, only a few feet from them now, point a
finger at another unarmed man, who raised his hands in defense.
Harath, his wolf said.
What are they doing all the way out here? Clell asked.
They are a long way from Wishing Moon Bay, his wolf said.
Yet close to where we were supposed to be meeting Nikolai, Clell pursed
his lips. Where is he, anyway? It’s been weeks…
“I’m asking for the last time! You hand that lump of silver over now, or
I’m going to let this Crimquill loose!” the larger of the two yelled.
The angry words were followed by a gesture at the Crimquill, a powerful
bird-like creature standing nearby, restrained by a third man.
Clell’s wolf eyed the creature. It was ostrich-shaped, but almost half the
size with a bulkier build, a deep serrated beak, and fiery orange plumage.
They were uncommon, but nasty as they come. Whoever these thugs were,
they certainly meant business.
“It’s just an heirloom. It means more to us than whatever paltry amount
you’d sell it for,” the woman retorted.
Ariyana… Clell could see the fury in her eyes even over the distance.
How did she let these thieves get the drop on them?
I don’t know, but you’re up.
“Don’t give me that!” The second burly man, with a blue sash around his
arm, shoved Harath to the ground.
In a silent swirl of smoke, the slender wolf was replaced by a man,
crouched, crossbow in hand.
Ariyana was held back by the bigger brute, while the other man grabbed
something from around Harath’s neck.
Clell nocked a bolt and raised the crossbow. The shaft of the bolt was the
same dark wood as the bow, the dark fletchings matching the shadow of the
forest.
With a satisfied grin, the man with the blue sash held up his hand.
Whatever he was holding glinted in the sunlight. A perfect target.
Clell squeezed the trigger of his crossbow. The bolt had barely left the
end of the weapon before he was replaced once again by his wolf, lunging
forward after the whistling projectile.
