the festive spirit feels distant, like a memory from another life.
I take a sip of my drink, its rich, smoky flavor grounding me for a
moment. But it’s a fleeting anchor, and soon, my thoughts drift away, lost in
a small magical town on the Gulf Coast to a life I left behind, to her…
The door opens with a quiet click, and Salvatore Rockwell, alpha shifter
and managing partner of the firm, steps in. His presence is commanding,
filling the room with an unspoken authority. “Jasper, I hear congratulations
are in order. That was an impressive deal you closed,” he says, his voice
resonating with pride and expectation. The room seems to shrink a little, his
presence filling up the space.
My office is a testament to modernistic design, where glass and metal
reign supreme. A massive desk of polished dark wood dominates the room.
Shelves line one wall, filled with legal tomes and various awards that gleam
under the strategically placed lights.
Mr. Rockwell pours himself a glass of the single malt whisky and sits in
one of the strategically placed leather chairs. A rectangular glass table sets
off the seating area. Behind him, the walls are adorned with modern art,
abstract splashes of color that are supposed to be thought-provoking. But
tonight, they’re just splashes on a wall, as distant and unimportant as the
city sprawled beneath me.
I follow the unspoken order and sit opposite him. “Thank you, sir.” The
words are right, the tone perfect, but inside, I’m miles away, back in a place
where magic is real and love isn’t just a contract waiting to be signed.
Turning to face him, the mask of the perfect protégé firmly in place, I say,
“I’m glad I could bring this win for the firm.”
He nods, his sharp gaze assessing me. “The board will hear about your
promotion to senior partner next week. I have no doubt they’ll approve.” His
words should be the pinnacle of my career, but they land with a weight
that’s unexpectedly heavy.
“And,” he continues, a hint of a smile playing on his lips, “I’m sure you
know what my daughter’s expectations are, having you made senior partner
now.”
“I do, sir.” Monica has made no secret of the fact that she expects a ring
on her finger by Christmas.
“This should pave the way for your future with her.”
The ring in my pocket suddenly feels like a lead weight. I’ve been
carrying it all day, a symbol of a future meticulously planned out for me. I
knew landing this contract would grant me Mr. Rockwell’s approval. The
restaurant is on standby, awaiting my call. “I appreciate your trust in me,
sir,” I say, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside.
“Trust has very little to do with it. You break my daughter’s heart, and
I’ll break your neck. Do you understand me?”
