“Happy New Year,” I said, handing the brown paper bag filled with
cinnamon rolls to Detective Ed McCoy. He opened the bag, his eyes briefly
scanning the topmost cinnamon roll.
“Perfect swirl on this one, almost symmetrical. You’ve got a steady
hand.” He offered a knowing smile, his detective’s eye for detail never offduty. “A happy new year indeed.” He grin broadened as he caught a whiff
of the cinnamon and vanilla that rose from the bag.
The year 1960 had rolled around and with it came a feeling of hope and
excitement.
“A happy new year indeed,” he said with a grin, glancing into the bag.
“See you tomorrow.”
I smiled as he left Appetite Bakery, the door jingling as it saw him out.
The cozy warmth of the bakery contrasted with the brisk, wintry air that
briefly swept in. He was my last customer for the day and I walked to the
door, turning the open sign to closed. The scent of cinnamon and freshly
baked bread still hung in the air, a sweet reminder of a good day’s work.
The bakery was charming in the winter chill, with checkered floor tiles
in alternating shades of cream and pastel blue.
I closed the patterned curtains with their floral designs. The bay window
that overlooked the street offered a picturesque view, often attracting diners
who liked to gaze out, but the traffic to the beach had come to a halt during
the freezing wintertime.
“That’s it?” Isaac asked, coming from the kitchen.
“Yeah, done for the day,” I said, dusting my hands on my apron before
hanging it on the hook. Dottie had already wiped down the tables, and
swept under the cushioned chairs. The display case with its wooden frame
was polished and we’d put away what was left of the array of pastries we
had on display every day.
Isaac chuckled, his eyes twinkling with humor. “Elementary my dear
Francis,” he quipped adopting a mock-serious tone, “The secret to a
successful bakery is not just in the dough, but in the warmth of the baker’s
heart.” He leaned against the counter, arms folded, a smile playing on his
lips. “It’s hard to imagine that the bakery has only been open for a week.”
I nodded. It had been a crazy week.
Appetite Bakery was a dream come true—I’d always wanted to be a
baker and I’d made pastries and experimented with desserts for as long as I
could remember. Just this morning, I unveiled the Detective Delight, a new
cinnamon roll recipe named in honor of Detective Ed McCoy, my most
frequent end-of-day visitor.
Now that my dream had finally been realized,
every day felt like an adventure, not like work. Townspeople enjoyed
discovering which local event or personality would inspire my next pastry
creation
