PRINCE ALAM YE LENA
Humans were strange creatures. Even living with one as I grew into
adulthood hadn’t afforded me any greater insight into their minds
than the other members of the delegation possessed from mere
passing acquaintance. As we walked down the shuttle’s ramp and into the
presence of thousands of humans for only the second time since our arrival
in their solar system, it was becoming clear that there were two camps
amongst them: those who welcomed us wholeheartedly, and those who
cautiously tolerated our presence.

Some of the humans were here as protection and so wore expressions of
seriousness as they watched us and the civilians surrounding them in equal
measure. Others were desperate to keep their faces neutral—no doubt so
that they might appear as though our meeting did not trouble them at all—
but the sour scent of their fear was hard to miss.

And then there were the humans in the back who were dressed to look
like us in furry costumes. Earth had a myriad of primitive non-sentient
species that resembled us, so it was interesting that these humans had
developed a subculture elevating those animals to our level before they
even knew we existed. I could admit to liking them best of all, so when I
raised a hand and waved to the crowd, I was truly waving at them. Their
enthusiastic reaction made me laugh quietly and feel like I was beloved in
ways merely being a prince of my people had never provided.

Beside me, Administrator Rijal growled before saying, “Why can we
not negotiate with the lovers? They would happily give us anything we
wanted.”
Thankfully, he spoke in Norlish so the humans nearest us could not
understand him, and I spoke the same as I admonished him. “Hush, Ghosha.

Remember, we are not here to take.”
He laughed, brief and sharp, golden eyes scanning the crowd and long,
white whiskers twitching. The humans called him a tiger and me a wolf.
Cats, canines, they classified us in their own ways regardless of how many
times we told them what we called ourselves. When they prefaced those
labels with the word anthropomorphic… It was disappointing that they
could only understand us in terms of them, but it was a start, so I tried not to
let it frustrate me.

“You may be here to give,” Ghosha said, “but my entire purpose as a
member of this delegation is to take and take and take.”
I watched as he smoothed his whiskers across one black and white
striped cheek and licked the cleft in his upper lip while grinning just enough
to reveal one fang. The human woman he’d aimed that at gasped a breath
and pressed a hand to her chest as her blue eyes widened and face flushed.
Her lust suddenly perfumed the air as we walked past her.

I resisted rolling my eyes at his flirting. “Do try to keep it in your pants
for a bit longer. We have barely scratched the surface of sexuality and
compatibility with them. They were entirely shocked by the anatomy
information we gave them and that was done via drawings alone.”
