JILL
The scenery around me flies by as I run, past the black onyx doorways,
past the terrible rooms full of demons doing demonic things, past the
creatures I tire of as I race away from the chaos I’ve left behind. I run so
fast, searching for a place to hide, that my chest is screaming for lack of air.
The Underworld is as much a terrible place as it is a grand one. When
I’d first been dragged here by Hades, I only saw the horror of it. But I’d
only seen a small section of it at first. Almost all black and carved from
different stone, there’s not much variation in the look of the inner halls
unless you count the different colored fires that rest in the lanterns.
The city
is much larger, much grander, and would give even the best places a run for
their money. The city is all bright lights and seedy dealings, but after so
long of being down here, I can see the beauty of it. The demons are
bothersome creatures, but the other people, those either trapped down here
like me or choosing to be down here, are not nearly so bad.
If I’m lucky enough to spend any time with them, that is.
Hades keeps me on a short leash. I despise the man. With his egotistical
demeanor and his desperation to have me love him, there’s nothing I
particularly like about him. It’s been a hundred years, and he has still not
given in, thinking I’ll simply slip into loving him like I fall asleep. He has
not yet learned that love cannot be forced, and no matter how much I
remind him of that fact, he does not give in, insisting I will one day love
him.
I don’t actually know how long I’ve been here either. Time passes
differently in Under, and while I have aged, I’ve aged far slower than I
might have elsewhere. I still appear in my thirties, or at least I think I do.
It’s been so long since I’ve been around normal people, I could be
remembering how people look back home wrong.
I pass through a large bar where I’d normally stop. Today, there’s no
stopping. I can’t without Hades catching up with me. A man in the corner of
the bar raises his glass to me. It’s all gold where he’s touched it, no longer
the polished onyx glass it was made from before. A few other men I know
sit with him, but none I care to see.
“Jill! Come join us!” Midas declares with a grin.
“Not today, boys!” I call, rushing past. “I’m escaping.”
He laughs. “Good luck!”
Because I’ve done this a hundred times, a million, searching for a way
out, trying to escape, and I’m never successful. They’ll see me again. They
always will, but I try not to let that frustration reach me. Hades cannot be
the only way I escape this place.
