Current Day
Lake Marlowe still rises and falls with the moon, the current chasing
her moonbeams just as I yearn to. The waves gently lap against the
shoreline as I sit upon the rocks at the edge. The port my kingdom had
spent precious months building now sits in decaying disrepair. The wood
has long since rotted into nothing, leaving behind skeletal remnants of a
once great achievement. Wasted. Another reminder of what I suffer.
Night is always so serene here in Vaivaria, though I have no idea if I
should still call this land that. The kingdom fell. The castle still stands, but
in disrepair, last I understood. That’s been so long now, I could be wrong,
and not many travelers dare pass by the lake that I can ask. I’m certain the
land has been claimed by another at this point, but none venture into this
area no matter how much I wish for the company.
This lake is cursed, just like I am.
My swans lay sleeping in their nests around me, their long necks curled
up tight, a few of them protecting young goslings beneath their feathers.
They’re the only remnants of my kingdom, the only ones who did not
abandon me in my time of darkness. I can’t blame my people in the end,
though. It’s not their fault that their queen was cursed and vanished, rumors
of her curse at Lake Marlowe unnerving most of them enough to leave.
It’s his fault, the wizard.
Odious.
He disappeared shortly after he cursed me, vanishing into the ether like
he had never existed at all. I know he existed though. He’s proven it every
morning when my curse reminds me of my weakness. He came back only
once since the curse was placed on my head and then never again. Now, I
suspect he no longer lives and that’s why he doesn’t come to rub my loss in
my face again. Or at least that’s my hope. Someone so powerful should
never be allowed to walk among people. It’s a crime of nature, to allow it.
But when one reaches that level of power, what can someone like I do
against such power? I’m strong, but I don’t hold wizard powers. I don’t
harness magic at all, save for this curse placed on my head. And in the end,
I suffered for it. I suffer now, trapped in his curse, existing in this small loop
of time that forces me to transform with the movements of the sun. I have
no bearings on passage of time. I do not age. I do not grow sick. I do not
die. There is nothing to distract me from my woe, nothing to hold my
interest.
Except for my swans.
They never abandon me. They never question me. They simply exist
here with me, trapped in this same time loop. Time somehow touches them
despite never touching me. I’ve watched generations grow old and die,
