Each time I do this, I hate myself a little more.
But I can’t stop. Not if I want to survive.
Five years I’ve been following the same routine. Five years of seedy bars
and too-tight clothes and grasping hands that repulse me. I always wait as
long as possible between these dreaded trips, ignoring the hunger, pushing
myself until I have no other choice but to relieve the gnawing pain.
Tonight is one of those nights, when I force myself out of the tiny studio
that’s become my safe haven, and become the person I’ve grown to despise.
This time the bar that I’ve chosen is even worse than the ones I usually
pick. Sticky floors, bar stools with ripped cushions, plastic cups with
cigarette butts dropped into dredges of beer, and suspicious trash littered in
every spare corner.
The din is nearly deafening, people shouting over each other to be heard
in the crowded space, and I have to press right up against the man in front
of me in order to be heard.
He’s eyeing my breasts greedily, and he slides his calloused hand from
my waist to my ass, giving it a painful squeeze. I take a sip of my beer to
mask the rush of disgust as he touches me, wishing for the thousandth time
that I could be anywhere but here.
I just want to get this whole miserable experience over with, so I can go
back home to my empty apartment and try to pretend that I’ll never have to
do this again.
I lean close to his ear and whisper to him, asking the only question I need
him to answer. I inspect his face as he grunts a response, and it’s exactly as
I had suspected. When I saw this man as I entered the bar, I knew right
away that he’d be my target.
Not because of his looks, or his clothes; I never focus on that. It was the
terrified expression of the woman he had pinned in a dark corner, his hands
grabbing at her, trapping her, grinding against her while she tried
ineffectively to pull free.
If I’m going to use someone for my own dark needs, at the very least I
can make sure I’m picking someone who deserves it. So I strode over to the
man, caught his eyes, gave him a little push, transferring his lewd intentions
away from her and towards me instead.
This question is my last verification that he’s the one for the night, and
with his answer given in the affirmative, I grasp his hand and pull him
outside, not bothering to utter another word.
Once outside, the cool early autumn air has a bite to it, raising
goosebumps all over my exposed skin. Too much skin; I hate displaying
myself this way, but I’ve found it’s a necessary evil in these circumstances.
The man- I don’t know his name- drunkenly leans in to slobber toward
my mouth. I duck away and tug him around the corner into an alley,
