So Much Fear
ROMAN
I’ve never seen such fear before.
The aura of fear surrounding the woman across the room is so dark, so
vivid; once it’s captured my attention, I can’t look away. An amorphous
cloud of vapor and mist, all in shades of purple and violet, twists and swirls
around her petite figure.
The aura isn’t only a visible sign of her emotion; it also emits a strong
ricochet of fear outwards, powerful enough that I can feel it where I sit. It’s
a storm of almost transparent clouds engulfing the body and extending
perhaps a foot beyond in all directions.
Not all auras are dark or upsetting. I can see the cheerful wash of yellow
around a grandmother, on the way to visit her new grandchild. Or the
vibrant explosion of orange around a businessman who just received a new
promotion. One time, I watched a woman accept her boyfriend’s proposal;
both of their auras flushed with a brilliant pink.
I can also sense certain emotionally charged events before they happen. I
can sense the primary emotion that will accompany the event, but not the
actual details.
When a coworker started displaying a glowing rose gold aura, I knew she
was going to become pregnant after many years of trying. Those
experiences almost make up for the other times, when the auras I view are
more solemn, dismal, sinister.
For the last forty years, since I first became a vampire, I’ve been able to
sense people’s auras. Sometimes it’s a gift, but much more often a curse.
It’s a curse when I sense a man’s bloody red aura, knowing the depth of
unresolved anger and fury waiting to burst free. It’s heartbreaking to sense
the heavy, gray despair surrounding a person, and wonder what tragedies
they’ve been through to reach such a sad place.
The auras of dark premonition are the worst, because I have no way of
helping. Without specifics, I’m unable to offer even a general warning
without coming across like a complete mental patient. Or at the very least,
slightly unhinged.
However, there are rare times when I can’t stay silent.
When I saw a dark, foreboding black aura surrounding one of my friends,
I had to say something. I told her to be careful and warned her fiance as
well; then had to hope for the best. I knew something terrible would happen
to her. And it did.
Thankfully, she survived the devastating attack that her aura foretold, but
it still haunts me that I couldn’t stop it from happening at all.
The still-heavy burden of guilt draws me back to the woman across the
room. She’s alone at a small table, but a coat draped over the opposite chair
is evidence of an absent companion. Beyond the vaporous eddies of violet,
her exquisite beauty is impossible to miss.
The first thing I notice is her glossy black hair, thick and straight as a pin,
falling to the middle of her back. The rich black compliments her porcelain
skin and flushed lips, drawing a close comparison to Snow White.
