IF I’ D KNOWN from the start that home was a feeling instead of a place, I
could’ve saved myself years of suffering. But it took my death to open my
eyes.
I hurled myself from one red, shingled awning of the palace to the next,
well aware that I could plunge to my death at any moment. My stomach
rose into my throat with each leap. I didn’t care. The priceless, jade figurine
I’d hidden in my obi was worth it.

Cold, winter wind bit at my skin and made my eyes water. My hot
breath clouded in front of my face. Steam rose from my body in waves.
And my legs burned, but there was no way in hell I would stop.
If I did, I was dead.
My black fox ears twitched backwards, listening to the pursuit of
thundering footsteps. The clank of weapons accompanied the sound.
Shuddering, I pushed myself harder, my bushy black tail lashing to keep my
balance.

My nostrils flared. I recognized the palace’s bushi by their smell. The
scent of polished steel and ginger, of old blood and leather. A pack of the
power-hungry, royal samurai chased me like hounds on the hunt.
Now, I was practical. I knew I couldn’t beat them in a fight. Each one
had at least four fox tails. Since those with ten were the most powerful of
any in existence, they were significantly stronger than me since I only had
one. I’d go down like a drunk sailor in a fist fight.

I smirked and tried to keep my balance on the slanted, red awning. To
be fair, they had every reason to want to beat my ass. And I wasn’t about to
apologize for it. Actually, I’d rubbed their noses in it.
The morning had started innocently enough. I’d stolen a hot bean bun
from a street vendor for breakfast. Next, I’d committed a crime by breaking
into the palace of Inari Okami, Goddess of Foxes, Rice, and Fertility. Then,
I’d looted the figurine in my obi to pawn at a local jeweler.
See? Harmless.

Before you judge me, you should know I had noble reasons for pillaging
that jade figurine. I’m going to sell it for enough money to get the hell out
of this gods-forsaken city and live someplace far, far away.
Far enough that no one had ever heard of the cursed male kitsune. The
only male kitsune in existence with feminine black ears and a feminine
black tail.
Like I said. It was worth it.
When I rounded a corner of the roof, I staggered to a stop.
A plunge of nearly twenty feet to the snow crusted ground below
awaited me. Panting, I lifted my eyes and gazed across the gap to the
opposite roof. My stomach dropped. The only way out was to leap across
the distance.

Sweat stung my eyes. Wiping the dampness from my forehead, I gritted
my teeth.
It wasn’t exactly easy to jump across the roofs of a five-story palace in
the heart of winter. A layer of ice covered everything.
