JANE AKA AMBER
The woman who would be Jane Miller for less than three more hours added
the boiling water to her French press coffee pot. It held exactly seven
tablespoons of the very strong Peet’s Coffee Major Dickason’s Blend
waiting at the bottom of the pot because she felt like a badass — and with
good reason. Her cellphone, which had been quietly resting on the black slab
granite of the drainboard, began to bark, the ringtone reserved for several of
her gossipy Ashland Drive, Colorado neighbors. One glance at the caller ID
had her smiling. Took her long enough to call. Jeez, she had thought the call
would happen a good half hour earlier than it had. Needless to say, she liked
the bark.
Maybe next season she would use a song like the theme from Midnight in
the Garden of Good and Evil. Or just plain old Dracula. The thought made
her smile. She might have even said she chuckled.
“Never, ever lose your ability to laugh,” she said aloud. She needed to
remember that. She was tired, it had been a very long season.
The screen that flashed Felicity’s name seemed to grow brighter in
anticipation. She was Jane’s best informant on the street. You always needed
one of those, and thankfully someone always volunteered for the job.
Felicity had stepped up as if she’d been born to do it. Her life’s work
culminated to this one task. Too bad Jane could never congratulate her.
“Hello,” Jane answered as if they were good friends, which one of them
thought they were. And that one was not Jane.
Felicity’s voice was excited. “Do you see the ambulance and police outside
of Jon and Paula’s? It is still there and has been there for over an hour. I
finally went over there and found out what was going on.”
“Tell me, is everyone alright? I’m just having breakfast,” Jane said with a
smile. Really, the homemade marionberry jam from next door neighbor
Karen was divine. She was taking it with her, maybe the stainless steel
French press too.
She casually glanced into her living room and through the
large picture window saw the flashing strobe lights in red and blue from
down the street. Well, that is done, and now she was done with Ashland
Drive. This was a relatively easy season. That’s what she called them.
Seasons. Jane liked it when they were easy. She would miss none of these
people, especially Felicity, who reminded her of a basset hound, no offense
to basset hounds. Although, truth be told, Jane loved dogs.
“Oh, my gawd, Jane. It is Jon,” Felicity sounded both breathless and excited
to be delivering such important news. Interesting. This adrenaline crash that
would probably hit in the next hour after she’d finished sharing this news
with the rest of the hood would be epic. Felicity would get a headache or
need to take a little nap for the rest of the day…
