just give me a book and leave me alone
NO LESS THAN ten kids knock into me as I work my way down the
narrow hallway toward Principal Smith’s office. Someone, most likely the
nurse, has reported me, yet again. I wonder what it’s for this time. Dirty
clothes? Emaciated looking? Who knows? My story is prepared and
airtight. It’s the same story I always use and the same story that has gotten
me this far without drawing attention to my home life.
“Ah, Amelia. Come in!” The overly chipper secretary smiles wide as I
open the office door. “How are you today, sweet girl?”
“I’m fine, Ms. Cherry. How are you?”
She leans back in her chair, opening a desk drawer. “I’m quite well,
thank you. Would you like a pack of crackers?” she whispers. “I have
plenty.”
I pat my stomach. “Oh, no, ma’am. I couldn’t eat another thing. I just
finished off what was left of my breakfast.”
Ms. Cherry looks me up and down, clearly not convinced. “Well, I have
plenty if you change your mind. How’s your mama doing?”
Alarms ring in my head. “She’s great, thank you. She just started a new
job off of Royal Street.”
“Really? Is she working in one of the shops down there?”
“Yes, ma’am. She’s hoping to earn enough money that we can move
into a house across the river.”
“That sounds nice, dear.” Ms. Cherry looks at me with pity. It’s a look
I’m familiar with. I see it every day.
The closed door on the other side of her desk opens as Principal Smith
sticks his head through the crack. “Amelia!” He fakes his kindness. “You
can come in now.”
Ms. Cherry smiles as I enter the office I know far too well. Just as I
suspected, the nurse is inside, waiting on me. I climb into the oversized
chair, taking up less than half of the seat. “You wanted to see me?” I ask.
“I did,” he answers. “Nurse St. James has a few concerns and asked me
to check in on you.”
I turn toward the nurse. “Concerns about what?”
The nurse looks uncomfortable. “Do we really need to do this with her
in here?” she asks Principal Smith.
“I believe that’s the best way to get to the bottom of the issue.” He turns
back to me. “How are you, Amelia?”
“Me? Oh, I’m good. Thank you for asking.” I turn on the charm, full
blast.
“Amelia?” Nurse St. James interrupts. “When was the last time you
changed your clothes or had a bath?”
I smile. “Oh, that. Our water got turned off last week. Mama says we’ll
have it turned on by tomorrow.” I lift my armpit, smelling. “I had a shower
last weekend. Do I smell?”
The adults share a look. “Would you like some clean clothes and a
shower?” the nurse asks.
I shrug. “I guess. Our water will be back on tomorrow, so I can wait
until then.”
“Amelia? We tried to call your mother several times. She’s not
answering.”
