YOU NEVER QUITE GET USED TO the smell of the French Quarter
during Mardi Gras. It’s a mixture of alcohol, urine, and other human
excrements that I’d prefer not to think about at the moment. Being a
vampire, my sense of smell is heightened to supernatural levels, which
makes it even worse. I fight the urge to cover my nose as I walk past the
unsuspecting humans, stumbling their way down Bourbon Street. Half of
them have lost pieces of clothing in their attempt to receive more throws
from the parades, most don’t even realize it.
“Tell me again why we’re here?” Viktor says as we dodge a large group
of college kids.
“Edon asked me to keep an eye on Drew.”
“Oh, yes. Now I remember…and why are we doing that?”
A large man, wearing a green sequin tiara, runs directly into me,
knocking me into the brick wall of a boarded-up store. “Watch it, asshole!”
“Bitch,” the man mumbles and keeps walking.
“God, I hate this time of year.” Viktor straightens his antiquated
waistcoat and white shirt. “Want me to kill him?” he asks with a laugh.
“Nah, not tonight.” I join in his laughter.
“If Edon asked you to attend to Drew, why am I here?”
“Because your immortal child of a daughter insisted you accompany
me. She acts like I can’t do anything on my own.”
He huffs a laugh. “Agreed. She is a bit of a mother hen.”
We dodge another large group of teens. “It’s been almost a year since
she changed me. I think it’s time for her to give me a little freedom.”
“You do realize you sound like a spoiled teenager, complaining about
their parent?”
“I’m well aware of what I sound like, but you try having a thousandyear-old vampire, trapped in the body of a five-year-old for all eternity, be
your maker. It’s not an easy task.” I stop in front of an inconspicuous bright
red door. “This is it.”
“Thank goodness. I was getting triggered by the crowd.”
I can’t control my laughter. “You’ve been on TikTok again, haven’t
you?”
“Maybe. How else am I supposed to become more hip?”
I look him up and down. “You can start by not dressing like you’re
straight out of a Jane Austen novel.”
He looks down at his clothes. “I don’t know what that means, but I’m
guessing you’re making fun of me.”
“More like making a positive suggestion.”
He makes a face. “Your positive suggestion can kiss my ass.” The red
door opens, revealing a large bearded man.
“What the hell do you two want?” The lycanthrope stares at us with
hatred in his eyes.
“Edon sent me,” I announce.
“Now, why would he do that?”
“Because they’re going to play a game of cards. Are you going to let us
in or block the entire door with your overprotective, pretentious puppy dog
performance?” Viktor has the tact of a serial killer. “I’m growing quite
bored.”
The man grunts, opening the door wide enough for us to enter. “Drew’s
in the corner.”
“Oh, look. You do know why we’re here. Amazing how your memory
magically started working again.” The wolf glares at Viktor, who relishes
the frustration he’s causing.
