35 SLEEPS UNTIL CHRISTMAS
SHAE
It’s three days before Thanksgiving and the world is falling apart around
me, which unfortunately means I don’t have my head on straight enough to
lie to my ex when he asks about my Thanksgiving plans.
Okay, okay, so I dated him one time before we decided just friends
would be best, but still.
I met Connor Finch a month after the divorce was finalized, days after
my friend Abbie forced a phone into my hands and said, Swipe on all the
hot ones.

She’d made me a dating profile.
“I’m not ready for that, Abbie,” I told her with all the kindness I could
muster. She pouted, and I couldn’t help it—I laughed at her. “I appreciate
you, but no.”

“I know you’re not ready to find your forever, but at the very least, you
need a rebound, Shae,” she told me, her voice clearly insinuating I was an
idiot and she was the one who knew all of the secrets of the universe,
including getting back on the horse, post-divorce.
Back then, her use of my name still made me smile, still brought a
flutter of hope into my chest for a fresh start and a bright future, just me and
my girls.

Ditching the full version of my name and moving back to the name
everyone called me when I was in high school, before I met Todd, was my
first step in reinventing myself after the divorce. When I finally got the
nerve to leave, I realized I didn’t recognize myself anymore. I decided with
this new lease on life, I could be whoever I wanted to be.

I landed on Shae, a name that has always felt comfortable, familiar. My
early college years were probably the last time I felt like me, like the
independent, spunky, optimistic version of myself. Bringing it back felt like
the right decision, the best way to try and emulate the way I was before I
met Todd, even if I’m not quite back to spunky and optimistic just yet.
Unfortunately, online dating did not feel like “me,” the new or the old
version, so I had been avoiding it like the plague.

“Abbie . . .”
“No, come on. It’ll be fun! I want you to swipe on the ones who are so
totally not your type. The young, hot guys.” I rolled my eyes at her and
sighed.

“Young, hot guys don’t want an old, washed-up mom of two.” I wasn’t
being self-deprecating when I said it—I was being realistic. At 35, freshly
divorced and with enough baggage to sink the Titanic, I was far from the
ideal match for a hot, young 24-year-old.

“First off, shut up. Second off. You’re a MILF. Young guys love
MILFS. And we’re not looking for a perfect match. We’re looking for
someone to fuck and move on. A young dude just looking to get off is way
less likely to fall in love with you.
