It being quite awkward to show up empty-handed before asking for a
favour, Cassia brought with her a box filled with homemade apple butter
and pecan biscuits, still warm from the oven.
Anyone living in Meredith knew that witches, especially Kitchen
witches, were the best cooks. She’d certainly received compliments from
friends and neighbours for said cookies, and they were amongst the bestselling items in her bakery, The Witching Flour.
She only hoped that the demon, with whom she had an appointment in
precisely ten minutes, would agree.
Cassia blinked when a snowflake fell on her nose. The December air was
crisp and the wind was icy as she stood amongst the bustling crowd on the
sidewalk. The street was teeming with people hurrying to complete their
holiday shopping during lunch break. As Cassia tried to carve a place for
herself amid the sea of shoppers, she was jolted and bumped several times.
Would that she could summon her magick and create an invisible energy
around herself and make the crowd part around her.
Alas, she couldn’t. Unless it was for an emergency, the use of magick
was strictly regulated in Angelene, the hub of commerce and culture of
Meredith, and its capital city.
Cassia stood before a towering skyscraper, staring up at its gleaming
facade made of glass and steel. A rush of people passed her, bumping her
shoulders, and she knew she was in everyone’s way. She knew she had to
enter, but couldn’t bring herself to do so.
Not just yet.
Gentle holiday carols filled the air as she stood rooted to her spot, taking
in the sight of sparkling silver and gold decorations, and the shimmering
tinsel lights that adorned every storefront and lamp post. She drew a deep
breath to calm herself. The warm, yeasty scent of the biscuits, tart apples,
and nutty pecans teased her nose, mingling with roasted chestnuts wafting
from a street vendor’s cart nearby.
Angelene had been transformed into a magical winter wonderland with a
contagious sense of cheer and joy. December held a great significance in all
of Meredith, not just in its capital, as it was a time of celebration for all its
residents. The humans celebrated Christmas. The demons celebrated their
midwinter festival, Yulefrost, to mark the longest night of the year. The
witches and faes rejoiced in the festivities of Hollymyrrh, a celebration
signifying autumn harvest’s and the beginning of frost.
Each community had unique traditions and customs, adding to the
season’s joy and merriment. Despite their differences, they came together in
unity and harmony to spread joy throughout Meredith.
But, despite the festive atmosphere, Cassia could not shake off the
sadness that always crept up on her every holiday season. Around this time
two years ago, she would’ve been at her bakery with her mother, decorating
Yule logs or hanging wreaths at the display windows. Last year, her mother
had been too ill and confined to her bed before passing away just days
before the new year.
Around this time, Cassia often found herself seeking solace at home —
but not today.
